ok so im reading that this is only for the "upgraded" version of the engine - so not a turbo or 4xe. that means us regular loser 3.6s are safe? besides being a loser that is
No...the PUG refers to the standard production Pentastar engine that was just upgraded from the previous version. Has nothing to do with a turbo or 4xe, so it applies to the following, as listed in the TSB:

"â—Ź 3.6L V6 24V VVT Engine Upg I w/ESS (Sales Code ERC).
OR
â—Ź 3.6L V6 24V VVT eTorque Engine Upg I (Sales Code ERG)."

Read more about the PUG here: https://www.pentastars.com/engines/PUG.php

Does anyone here have good data on what the frequency of failure is or the conditions which make it more or less likely?

If you had the repair done, how long did it take to get parts? Was it fixed in warranty or outside warranty? If outside of warranty, how old was your Wrangler and how many miles?

My view is the problem was resolved with recent production. To say it was not, is overly pessimistic to the point of being unrealistic.

Does this mean that Jeep/FCA is on the hook, even for JL’s outside warranty?
A TSB is not a recall, just a technical bulletin. It does not mean that Jeep will pay for the repair if you are out of warranty...

It does make it more likely Jeep will pay for the repair out of warranty and does trigger an investigation which could lead to a recall. There is also the possibility of a class action lawsuit.

If this is a thing then why isnt it a recall instead of a TSB? i dont mean to ask that to be a jerk about jeep service rather than how does the manufacturer determine the difference?

Best of luck with the repair and please keep us posted on how it all turns out. Did your engine actually throw a code or is it just the rough idling and ticking? How many miles do you have on the engine?

Since we're on this topic, are TSBs beyond warranty/mileage limits done free of charge? I suspect not, but just wanted to see what folks are experiencing out in the wild.
Thanks! I’ll keep y’all updated. I did throw a code. It was for Bank 1 phaser. I have 30,000 miles on the new engine so it’s still under warranty. I started experiencing hesitation with takeoffs and loss of power while driving. Didn’t notice really rough start ups. I’m not 100% positive on the TSB if it’s beyond warranty. I’ve had TSBs done even when out of warranty; and I had them deny the work for TSBs also since I was out of warranty (replacing the aluminum steering box with the steel one). If I wanted to pay for it then they’d do it but wouldn’t do it just b/c a TSB was issued. That is a good questions though. Maybe someone else can answer that.
I will be reaching out to Chrysler customer care to work at extending the warranty for this engine. Esp being this is engine #3 and already having issues at 30,000 miles and a TSB being issued showing they know there’s an issue with these engines.

Although it is interesting that when they put out a TSB on the loose steering AFTER I'd already had the steering stabilizer replaced under warranty (and I continued to have the issue), I went in, told them the issue, and they replaced the aluminum box with the steel one under warranty. It obviously varies greatly, but in that particular case I came out to the good. Then I ended up completely upgrading my steering hardware across the board and it finally got right (for my 2018 JLU Sahara). My 2024 JLUXR is significantly better from the factory, and so far I have not upgraded the steering components, but compared to what I did for our 2018, it is definitely looser and eventually I will upgrade the components for it as well.

As to frequency I have no idea. But… my jeep is currently at the dealership to get this repair. I started the process for this on June 25th. At the time I was told there was no ETA on when the part I needed would be available as there was a nationwide back order for the parts and no estimated date even given. It could easily be 3-4 weeks. It took a week to get the parts in, thankfully. Said it should be a fairly quick repair. Hopefully out by late tomorrow; otherwise Wednesday. It’s being fixed under warranty. Mine is. 2020 JL. It’s at 144,000 miles. But this engine only has 30,000 miles on it.

Sounds like you have been through a lot with an engine replacement already under your belt. The good news is The parts are being delivered with reasonable speed. Good luck to you.

That I have. Two engines actually. I’ve learned way more about engines than I ever wanted to know. Haha. But yes very glad the parts came much sooner than I was expecting. Just hope that’s the end of it all. Thank you!
