Yea, that's horrendous. The only solution is exchange for a new one. Sorry but that Jeep is headed for a crib death face down in the crusher.

I just stoped by the local dealer. They had 3 sport s. one of them had a 1 foot section of bad weld on the frame on the driver side. The rest did not appear to have any problems.

Does Jeep build the frame or is this supplied by a subcontractor?

Jeep should replace your JLU and give this one to Jeep CEO Mike Manley for his daily driver.

On a serious note, should this be reported to NHTSA? A weld failure in a suspension component could be catastrophic and deadly. Who knows how many frames look like this or possibly worse.

I would definitely hold off on the lift and tires until this is resolved.

That is a bit concerning out of three JLs you happened to look at, one had a section with what appeared to be bad welding. I wonder what is the likelihood of getting a JL with frame weld issues. I wouldn't discount early teething pains as a possible cause. While a weld procedure can potentially fail any time in a vehicle production run, as time goes by and results are examined, would not be surprised if the manufacturer better hones the process in terms of adjusting some programming and settings of the machines. You try to have everything 100% from the start, but sometimes there is an issue and you learn from mistakes and improve the process.

I'm actually an amateur MIG welder. Emphasis on the "amateur", lol. I have a wire feed MIG welder with argon/co2 shielding gas. It took me a while reading and practicing to get good welds. One day I would have a solid weld, good penetration and no porosity, patting myself on the back. Then next time I fired up the welder, crummy looking welds. It was quite frustrating. One day a light bulb kind of went on over my head, as I was welding steel plate to the sides of a friend's CJ frame. I got everything dialed in and the mechanics down, and the welds were a thing of beauty, nice lapping marks and everything. He later had the Jeep at a shop and the welder there was commenting how nice the welds looked, which was good for my confidence.

Anyway, if there are some small segments of welds that are of lower quality, if not on areas where a suspension mount or something is attached to the frame, probably not a big deal? Still who wants bad welds. Hope this gets worked out for owners with this issue.

This is what happens when parts are massed produced. Jeep or whatever car company pushes the suplier to build xxx number of frames or parts a day. So then the suplier pushes its employes to hurry up and get numbers out.
I was lucky enough too build the TJ frame for almost 3 years. Before i went too the chevy trailblazer line.
But even on both lines i did see crap go down the line.
As for QC checks not every frame is checked. An xx anount out of 100
Its all about the numbers

Sorry you got sh!t welds/frame

Good luck

Isn’t this frame htdrofotmed steel? I’m also assuming that robots are doing the welding of the breakers and such?

Must have been built on a Friday. Lazy robots!
I was calling all the time to find out what day my Rubicon was built! I told them it was very important to me to know the date it started and finished.... I’m a firm believer in that Friday Monday stuff, mine was built on Wednesday and finished on Thursday.. I would’ve canceled my order if it was built on Friday or Monday. :)

That assembly plant runs 24/7 pretty much. Day it is built is irrelevant.

I’m aware of that, however, the start date and finish date is documented so it is relevant to me knowing it was “not” built on a Friday or Monday, that was my point.
