While installing my winch I noticed some frame welds that were solid rust and unpainted so today I spent the day going through the entire frame finding spots here and there that had no paint or coating on them. I wire brushed them and cleaned them with Prep-All and then painted them with Rustoleum.
It was weird. Like the frame got down the line and had to be spot welded after the paint work was done. There was a lot of porosity in the welds as well as others described too.
Figured it was better if I just addressed it myself. Still love my JL and have no regrets buying it. Just could not ignore seeing those rusted welds.

I just stoped by the local dealer. They had 3 sport s. one of them had a 1 foot section of bad weld on the frame on the driver side. The rest did not appear to have any problems.
Mine has about a 10 inch section where the frame support bolts to frame/drivers side. I don’t think it will compromise the structural integrity by how thickly it was welded to begin with

Which winch bracket and winch did you purchase and install?

Did you have the factory steel bumper and if you do, do you have to buy the face plate that replaces the blank one?

Picking up my JLUR in 10 days have everything ready to go except for that.

I bought the Rusty’s winch plate and a Warn VR-10S winch with the factory metal bumpers

Did you have to buy the black plate that replaces the On the steel bumper or did it come with the bracket. The winch mounting plate, I’m not talking about the Farilead. On their website it doesn’t show everything that comes with it.

It comes with the Rusty’s winch plate. I did not have to purchase anything else.

I have a Smittybilt X20 is that what you installed? No problems with it fitting (L) wise?

Just a heads up. I got my Jeep back from the dealer. Engineer said nothing wrong with it. Now it sits in the garage since my wife won't let me drive my kids in it.

Your dealership has an engineer? Not a part-changing monkey they're calling an "engineer"? I doubt it lol.

Dealers really stick it to Jeep owners. They make thousands on the sale then don't wanna stand behind the product. Shameful.

So is this what they will be considering to be sufficient quality from now on?

I haven’t responded anymore because without specs I can’t say what is in tolerance but to say the welds don’t look that bad? .. LOL.. those welds look like dog crap... I guarantee these Jeeps are way overwelded but the pics I’ve seen are piss poor. Period. If it’s in spec there’s nothing anybody can do about it but if the print says 1/8” porosity/ft the pic posted here is a fail... heck even 3/16/ft fails....
These are a few pics but almost all welds in the frame looks like this. Extremely poor quality.

FCA spec is 6.4mm (sum of diameters) per 25mm of weld.

I'll start by saying I know nothing about welding. Is it possible to have someone go over the factory welds? would this make them stronger? how much of a pain in the ass would that be?
