I'm going on a trip tomorrow and I checked the oil on our Jeep and it was clearly overfilled during my Jeep Wave oil change. I think it is the typical 1 quart overfill. Any thoughts on how bad that would be if I ran my 400 mile trip on an overfill? I've already put 3000 miles on that oil level. My dad's shop always puts an extra quart in on his Chevy Colorado and it has 170K on it with no leaks as they say "It can take an extra quart". I do my own vehicle work and should have double checked the wave change. I don't have time to drain a quart down before I leave. Any thoughts?

Putting in too much oil is bad. Worst case is the crank will slap into it and create air bubbles in the oil. That air will froth the oil and now your oil pump is sending air bubbles to the rotating parts and you are not lubricating. Good way to lunch an engine.

I do my own oil changes as much as I can but when I pay to have t done I ALWAYS pull the dip stick to check the level and to make sure they actually changed the oil. If you are not checking the oil before leaving, you should.

Chances are you will be fine if you have gone 3,000 miles so far on it. Your dads shop that always overfills, I would never set foot in that place again even to use the bathroom

Think too much oil can foam up or get lots of air in the mix, but find it weird to think techs overfill after the updated 3.6 has been out how long now? 6, 7 years? How is that possible since most of them have probably been replaced.

Glad I have good dealers.

I do all my own oil changes as well but "free" is too good to pass up sometimes. If I put the oil in, I have a lot of faith in it. Maybe I'm reading this wrong as it is my first braided wire dipstick. There is a little bit of oil on the braided wire, here is a picture of the dipstick fresh off the pull.

EDIT: Maybe it's spot on, when I run a paper towel on the braided part there is clearly a little oil. I think I'd feel better forgoing my 3rd "free" oil change.

It's not going to hurt the 3.6.
Thousands, maybe 10s of thousands of these engines have been run that way and we don't see damage. Think about it - you caught it, but think of the typical Jeep buyer and owner who leaves the dealership after an oil change and may not check it until 2 or 3 thousand miles later - if that. I'd bet that 1/3 of all Jeep owners don't check the oil more often than that.
It's not a "good" thing to be over-full, but these have a windage tray in them - the crankshaft can't slap the oil in the 3.6 unless it's WAY over full.
If you maintain 30 psi under about 3,000 RPM and 70+ over that, it's holding oil pressure. Air compresses and it would likely struggle to maintain pressure if there was an issue.

With 5 quarts it's often just above the cast end and onto the braided "stick". All of my 3.6s have read that way even with the exact amount of oil in them.

My first Gladiator had an extra quart in it for several hundred miles before I noticed it.
Ran it another 20,000 miles with 0 issues, not so much as a valve train tick, before trading it at 27,000 miles.

It’s only going to take, what…maybe 10 minutes to loosen the plug and let a little bit out.

Thanks for being my conscience I drained about 1.2 qts out this morning and it is now sitting in the range. Sigh! It took some muscle to get the oil plug loose, I think they put it on with an impact wrench. I used my 1/2" breaker bar.

I posted about this a while back. Twice in a row the dealer overfilled my GC and then argued into the ground that it was not. I have 6 "free" oil changes courtesy of Jeep Wave and the Forever Warranty.

If it were not my wife's car and a lease, I would do it myself, but at this point, I could not care less since I know I am not keeping it.

I would not let any dealer change the oil in my Wrangler.

Not sure I'm seeing what you're seeing. Looking at the oil on the stick itself, and the impression on the paper towel next to it, it appears to me that the oil just goes to the tip-top of the cross-hatching, which is exactly what you want.

Perhaps it looks different in person, and it's not coming through in the photo?

You've already let some oil out, so it's resolved now. But for other folks looking at the thread, if my dipstick looked like this post-change, I'd smile and say "perfect."

I mean... I'd run it
Yep, me too.

Free oil change is the worst thing. I have free oil change as long as I own this Jeep and the last time they changed it, my dipstick was like yours. I thought same as you, so I dived under the Jeep, used a measuring cup and removed 1 quart of oil by loosening the drain bolt and letting a thin flow of oil fill the measuring cup.

To my big surprise, it was still high on the dipstick!!!! So I said Fack-it and drained the rest. I removed 6.5 quarts more . So my engine had 7.5 quarts in it. As said, that was the last time they did an oil change. I won't let them sabotage my Jeep. No wonder some people experience seals and all kind of leaks.

I'd rather do it myself yearly for around $100 and know exactly the make, grade and quantity of oil I have in my engine. These idiots won't touch it again.

After my first Jeep Wave free oil change, I checked my dipstick too and it was really hard to tell. New engine and clean oil is hard to see on the stick. I wiped down the stick and was still having a hard time seeing it. It was indeed higher than the cross hatch marks, but not knowing exactly what 5 quarts looked like, I had a hard time telling.

I used to see the same dipstick complaints on an NC Miata forum I was on (same style of dipstick).
The key to getting a good read on these, is to wipe them completely clean (zero trace of oil), on the cross-hatch area prior to reinsertion.... (that sounded a bit strange ??).
This makes reading these dipsticks a snap.

That’s a major recurring issue with lazy mechanics. They use an impact wrench on everything. The oil plug should be maybe 25-35 lb ft. Tighten by hand and snug it 1/4 turn with a wrench. Good job!!

Historically the oil level is +/- 1 quart

I also ran a quart low when I raced and + 1 quart in the hot summers in the Sonoran Dessert and my trips down into Mexico and in Texas. Never an issue.
