You may just be that unfortunate one that got a bad one. Since 2008 I’ve run the local Jeep club so I have a lot of first hand knowledge of Jeep issues in my area. Personally in my family alone we have /have had 14 Jeeps. The only one with an engine issue was an early JK 3.6 but that wasn’t a reliability issue, just noisy top end. Most of these 14 are/were high milers.I don't think anyone can say I beat the crap out of mine, nor can anyone say it isn't maintained very well. Owners that have not had trouble, say they are reliable. I have a long list of things I've had to fix on mine, the engine replacement being the latest at 34,454 miles. I'm 68 years old, I don't flog the engine. I have what I'd say is a healthy respect and knowledge of mechanical things, having had a career as an engineer in aerospace. But this thing has tried my patience with its problems. I really enjoy it on trails like the Rubicon and Moab. But if I didn't do those things, I'd be driving something other than a jeep.
Now, that being said, the dealer also plays a huge role in your reliability. If your dealer doesn’t / won’t fix things properly the problems will compound and reliability goes out the window. Finding a good dealership with well trained techs can be a challenge, I agree.
Doing your own inspection and maintenance is a plus and greatly increases your chances of finding bent, broken, worn out parts before they leave you on the road side. Anyone who wheels at all should be doing this, at the very least, before and after each adventure off road.
