I don't think anyone can say I beat the crap out of mine, nor can anyone say it isn't maintained very well. Owners that have not had trouble, say they are reliable. I have a long list of things I've had to fix on mine, the engine replacement being the latest at 34,454 miles. I'm 68 years old, I don't flog the engine. I have what I'd say is a healthy respect and knowledge of mechanical things, having had a career as an engineer in aerospace. But this thing has tried my patience with its problems. I really enjoy it on trails like the Rubicon and Moab. But if I didn't do those things, I'd be driving something other than a jeep.
You may just be that unfortunate one that got a bad one. Since 2008 I’ve run the local Jeep club so I have a lot of first hand knowledge of Jeep issues in my area. Personally in my family alone we have /have had 14 Jeeps. The only one with an engine issue was an early JK 3.6 but that wasn’t a reliability issue, just noisy top end. Most of these 14 are/were high milers.
Now, that being said, the dealer also plays a huge role in your reliability. If your dealer doesn’t / won’t fix things properly the problems will compound and reliability goes out the window. Finding a good dealership with well trained techs can be a challenge, I agree.
Doing your own inspection and maintenance is a plus and greatly increases your chances of finding bent, broken, worn out parts before they leave you on the road side. Anyone who wheels at all should be doing this, at the very least, before and after each adventure off road.

Good timing on the, uh, article.

Here's an extract from a magazine article (the real thing):
When surveyed, 59% of 2021 Jeep Wrangler owners would purchase their vehicle again.

So, for all of you 41 percenters clogging this discussion forum, pipe down!

The data is evident in the Sept. 2024 issue of Consumer Reports Used Cars issue, so the three-year data lag is right on time.

I'm more surprised a larger portion (61%) would buy a 4xe again.... then again, who are they actually surveying with these and how come I never get asked.

Reliability ratings should be reserved for vehicles that are 10+ years old with over 100k miles.
Well there goes my '02 Dakota. Only 97K on the ticker. ;-)

Normal people. Not any of us.
Lease it, drive it around with the top down, turn it in for a new one a few years later.

We're going to be seeing a lot of this bullshit in the coming years with all the normies buying Wranglers and expecting them to be like a CRV or an F150. They're quickly replacing the Corvette as the mid-life crisis cars: a bunch of people buying them, bolting on a ton of crap, polishing them up, claiming them as "show vehicles" with stupid themes, handing out ducks, but never going off roading or using them for anything more than a glorified grocery getter.

I get it takes all types, but....

Pretty sure this crap comes up on a Jeep forum at least once per year. I remember when the JK came out, bottom of the barrel, cheap crap, not reliable, Consumer Reports' worst car ever, USA Today headlines about how Jeep was the crappiest brand ever, least reliable, etc.

Part of it they blamed on the hollowing of the Jeep brand under Daimler owernship...

Part of they blamed on "normies" buying Jeeps and demanding modern comforts like additional doors, with glass (Unlimited, I'm looking at you...)

And here we are again, almost 18 years later....

Dakotas are unreliable- my son’s 98 only made it 328,000 mi before the trans failed, and the 318 was starting to burn a little oil too… they don’t last ;)
I know, right? Totally unreliable. All I've done it replaced tires and changed oil/filter. I did have trans & differential oils changed around 60K. One repair - trans dipstick vibrated a hole into the A/C line. Otherwise, it's been a sweet ride.

Amazing what a little TLC can do.

318 🤤 One of my favorite engines!
It still ran good, but he struggled to pass the smog test the last time before the trans failed, forget why.. heck, we get senior breaks after 65, an over 300K mi vehicle should get a smog test break 🤔

CR’s data comes from their members. All it says to me is that most people who own Jeeps despise CR, and don’t subscribe.

If you want to get the Jeep higher on their list, you could always start a movement with the forum members to have everyone subscribe and rate their JLs as great and reliable.
