CR does a terrible job with auto reviews because of the narrow criteria used for their performance benchmarks. Of course the Wrangler does poorly because it wasn’t designed for fuel efficiency, a cushy ride, or great handling. No merit is given for off road prowess.

That said, their reliability ratings have merit because it’s based on survey reporting from owners. The Wrangler rated more trouble-prone than most vehicles. Unfortunately that has been my personal experience.
They only poll CR subscribers and only tally results from the people who bother to respond.

Anyone who has taken a statistics 101 class can discredit their results because their sample set is biased.

I know we all love to shit on CR for the obvious bias'd poll results, but I can tell you first hand it's relatively accurate when it comes to our brands. The hybrid pacifica was #1 last year for the most unreliable vehicle, and let me tell you that's 100% accurate. Transmission failures so rampant they had to give them an unlimited mileage warranty, hybrid issues out the wazoo, and even the ICE blowing head gaskets left and right. They just expanded the exploding battery recall from 17-18 to 17-21 just this month. It really sucks because the pacifica is a damn fine minivan. Rides smooth, tons of room, and nice creature comforts.

The 4XEs were rank 3 IIRC, and that's with them combining the grand cherokee and wrangler. We'd take too many spots otherwise.

I get it, we all love our jeeps because of the lifestyle they afford. The reality is you're gambling your expectations. Like 70% of my workload these days are brand new vehicles under 20k miles with all sorts of quality issues. It's gotten really, really bad. I say this as someone with 2 2024 JLs in my driveway. Both were delivered with a horrendous factory alignment and both have constant radio software issues. The 2-door has the 3.6L hesitation issue. The 392 got delivered with an undercharged A/C system. I fixed what I could and just deal with the radio issues because I know there's nothing to be done to fix it. I'm actively working with STAR whose working with engineering to address the hesitation issue (still no updates on that front)

If you bought a brand new 4XE and made it to 30k with only routine maintenance you should literally buy a lottery ticket. You don't know how lucky you are. The bar is that low.

And there again JD Power doesn’t see it that way. Your experience is the opposite of mine with the exception of the hybrid.

This fits under the "even a broken clock is right twice a day" explanation. It's just coincidence that they happen to be somewhat accurate here. CR has no idea how to evaluate an automobile.
