Yep. In that video I was. I'm now on 37s.
I’m just glad to see, in your video, someone who did the same as I. Yeah, I’ve got a lot of space under the fender, but I use ALL of it. I have stuffed my 35s almost to rub, many times. I prefer to have that space for articulation.

Yeah I'm probably going to bump up to 3.5" springs and extend the rear bump stops a smidge. With the Mickey Thompson's, I rub a little. But they run a hair taller than other 37s.

I was having a great morning, then you made me think about my MIL.
I got rid of my MIL when I got rid of the source, my 10-year anniversary of that happy day is coming up early next year

How many of y’all have damaged a stock diff/diff cover?
I didn't but my buddy did on his when we did Kane Creek. just caught the bottom edge and peeled it back a little..I used my 4lb hammer and knocked it back in place and he only lost a shot glass full of gear lube but he was so pissed it kind of ruined the rest of the run for him..I have a video somewhere of it and we still laugh about it because you hear him hit and then the "FUCK" at the top of his lungs....he is super reserved and quiet so that made it funny for everyone...

Heavy duty covers serve two main structural purposes.

They take a hit better than the stamped steel covers. And keep in mind that sometimes you do go backwards and can back into a rock.

They help give more strength to the whole housing. Think of it like having a big bowl. A sheet of tin foil doesn't keep it from flexing when you push on the sides. But put a thick lid on and it doesn't flex anywhere near as much. The axle housing does flex a lot like a bowl. That flex causes gear misalignment, which is the leading cause of broken teeth on gears.

Secondary functions include resisting peeling the edge when you drag the diff over a rock. Also, some people just like the look.

Edit: Some covers do help with cooling by adding fins (more surface area helps cooling). And some covers add a drain plug to make servicing the diff easier.
I know you know, but you actually nailed it with this sentence here : ‘’ Also, some people just like the look.’’

Yep. And there's nothing wrong with that being the only reason someone has when building their own Jeep.

I bashed my skid pretty good. Got it on video. It's in the intro so you can see it right away. There's a bit more about it later in the video.

Edit: skip to about 14:20 to see the damage to the skid.
That looks like an "interesting" trail for 35"s lol
Did the diff skid bending block access to the diff cover bolts? Almost looks like you'd have to cut the lip off to gain access.

Being a guy who won’t go larger than 35s, kudos to him and his wife! If I cannot throw my Jeep over (or through) an obstacle on 35s, it ain’t worth even trying with 37s🤣 I have a penchant for calculated reckless disregard - but I haven’t snapped anything. Yet.

Ya I'm starting to wonder if I should stop the madness. Bigger tires means trying harder obstacles, which have a higher chance of forcing an upgrade. Like a new driveshaft for example...

I had developed a leak around one of the diff covers, just before I was out of warranty. Instead of taking it to the dealer for another crappy gasket, I took it to my 4x4 shop. They pulled both covers, inspected, and reinstalled both with some kind of heavy duty adhesive - no gasket needed. God help them if/when they have to pull the covers again. Supposedly the adhesive is so good, bolts aren’t necessary. Mine ARE bolted on too, though.
Haha! Hopefully this isn't what they are using/calling dif cover silicone:

It ended up being fine. It sticks out a bit.

For the record, she's my buddy's wife. He doesn't go on those trails.
