One has to wonder....what's truly "better"? Stamped steel, or cast aluminum? A lot of aftermarket covers are cast aluminum. Stock covers are typically stamped steel.

You might bend the lip of your steel cover, or dent it on a rock, but that's what's great about steel. Bend it back.

But if you bash a piece of cast aluminum to where it cracks? You're not bending that back, and now you need a replacement cover on the trail?
You would be surprised how much it takes to crack those diff covers. And if you're hitting things that hard you're likely breaking other stuff first.

Since @GATORB8 thinks I’m stupid (just kidding bro!), I went with diff skids - even though I lose about a half inch of clearance. In fact I’m so stupid, I bought the RC skids🤣 Actually though, they are a beefy, solid product, and the least expensive I could find.

Similiar to my MC covers, this reminded me of something. The standard bolts on the stock covers are easy to screw up. Countersinking the bolts helps keep that from happening.

I'm plain dumb, so I have both, lol.

I have skids to protect my drain plugs. But I also went with HD covers to beef up the housing to protect the gears.

I did the same. On my JK I had HD covers but on my JLs I keep the stock covers and use dif skids to protect them. So far, so good.

I can’t do both; I’m married to the CFO.🤣

I had developed a leak around one of the diff covers, just before I was out of warranty. Instead of taking it to the dealer for another crappy gasket, I took it to my 4x4 shop. They pulled both covers, inspected, and reinstalled both with some kind of heavy duty adhesive - no gasket needed. God help them if/when they have to pull the covers again. Supposedly the adhesive is so good, bolts aren’t necessary. Mine ARE bolted on too, though.

I thought it was funny actually. But ummm…speaking of angry people…yikes!
I didn’t interpret it as anger, but well-intentioned and humorous sarcasm.

Being they are the lowest-hanging fruit, it made sense to me to add the skids. I don’t see many tropical rocks down here, but I do plow over the occasional downed tree, and I go out to AZ periodically to wheel.
