I have filled the tank of my recently purchased 2021 4xe four times now (three stations) and three of those times I have to babysit the pump because it keeps backing up the spout and clicking off. Incredibly frustrating. One station worked fine, of course, I don't remember which one it was.

It is happening at stations that worked fine on my prior car (also work fine on my F350 but that's diesel, so irrelevant).

Is this common in Jeeps and/or 4xe's?

You may have an issue with your evap canister or fuel system (vent). What you experience is a symptom of that.

My Wife's Grand Cherokee (2017) did that. Turn the nozzle upside down, so the squeeze part is up. Then it worked fine.

From experience, I'd say it's possible with any vehicle.

E.g., we occasionally use a gas station at a local grocery store, in order to redeem cents-off-per-gallon savings via the store card. No matter the vehicle that I've driven up to any of the pumps, the nozzles at that location are recurringly finicky, exhibiting behavior that you describe in your post. Sometimes they'll fill the tank without interruption, and in other instances, I'll need to fiddle with the nozzle's position, and/or restart the fuel flow, depending. There's no rhyme or reason to it.

The pump nozzles at the 1 or 2 other gas stations that we use are largely trouble-free, again without regard to the vehicle that we're refueling. So, no, I wouldn't focus the blame exclusively on a Wrangler here. A fuel venting issue, dodgy emissions canister, etc. can occur on any modern vehicle.

We had a Jeep Compass that we would occasionally have to pull the handle back about an inch and turn it 30-45* to a side then it worked fine. Probably an issue with the in-tank vent line but our slight alteration was a free fix so never went looking beyond that.

Don't push the pump all the way in. Back it off just a little bit and it'll be fine.

I tried everything but upside down this morning, finally got pissed and left with a third of a tank.

I’ve had the issue since day one at a Gulf gas station and one particular pump at a Citgo

This happens to me as well. There's 1 pump at the nearby Shell that I always avoid for this reason. The rest of the pumps there work fine. It seems like it's gas station dependent as well. Sometimes I'm fine, sometimes it'll keep clicking off.

I have had this happen at Costco stations that have collars over the nozzle that require you to apply pressure toward the vehicle. If you let off, it stops the flow.

I park to the left of the pump, pulling the extra-long hose from the right side to the left, so that the hose tension applies pressure holding the nozzle in.
