Five wheel tire rotation pattern

Remember when radials were just becoming popular and they recommended strongly against changing the direction of rotation of the tire? That really limited rotation patterns. Some shops even dismounting tires and flipping them on the wheel so the tire could retain the direction of rotation on the other side of the vehicle. Turned out to be fake news.

since i see faster and more irregular wear on the fronts, i like the fronts to cross to the rear to even out. rears have a chance to flatten/smooth out before they move forward to the front.

when we do our rotations, the spare has been just hanging around on the back for x000 miles since the last time it was on the ground. as it goes back into service, i prefer it to be on the rear axle to work out any issues it may have picked up while hanging about and not have as much influence on the steering.
this way i rarely have any tire pulling or off-center steering wheels after rotation. (this has not always been the case when i've done it other ways.)

one point i would reiterate that i haven't seen mentioned here yet; if you're having someone else mess with your wheels/tires, check your tire pressures and lug nut torques when you get it back!
get in the habit of checking them both as soon as you get it back, and you'll likely find they're both almost always wrong. (i don't usually go any further from the shop than around a couple of corners to do my check; even though they're almost always wrong, i don't like to embarrass the shop monkeys by checking it right in front of them.)

Been using the same pattern, but last month I stopped in to a local tire shop (just one dude) and gave him this printed out, which he's done before with my dad's Jeep and for some reason, all the colored arrows everywhere must've short-circuited his brain that day. Poor guy just stared at the damn thing for probably 10 minutes.

Jokingly told him I found it on the internet, so it must be right! But I actually felt kinda bad about it

If I were the OP I would re-do it to the proper way. ie drive tires straight ahead.....that is the proper way on a straight axle 4wd vehicle. that way it is easier to keep track of...I am a beat down old drunk and I have done every rotation on my vehicles since the 70's. I would not trust someone else to do it. too many stories of cross threaded lugs....

That's what I am going to do. Only went to the dealer because it was "free".

Yeah, it's not hard to understand and he's done it several times before from the exact same picture.

Sometimes you've just got a lot going on and some dipshit hands you a Jeep diagram with arrows of something you've been doing every day for 50 years and you're like, "What the fuck is this shit bro?"

It eventually "clicked" with him and he quickly got it done, torqued the wheels and spare down to the values I wrote on the paper, offered to adjust my pressures and only wanted $5 for everything (gave him $25 for saving my back). I'm letting all 3 of my Jeep "Waves" expire to either do stuff myself or get done by somebody that actually cares about their work, and this guy earned my business for my next set of tires!

Can someone please explain why after 5 tire rotations, where every tire has been in all positions, you guys still keep using the Madden system? I'm trying to understand the benefit and can't find one, over the simple clockwise rotation (no printers, diagrams required)

I can’t speak for everyone - but here’s my personal opinion/experience. The tires that I use, have an aggressive tread pattern. They’re a hybrid design with big mud lugs on the edges. These types of tires have a tendency to get uneven wear for various reasons, when in the front position. Any aggressive tire can have this happen. Rotating the front tires to the rear at the same time & cross rotation in particular; will correct any uneven wear and extend the life of those tires. The cross rotation will correct any cupping and/or feathering of the tread. And of course we get 20% more miles on tires overall.

do you think this is due to turning and not proper camber, toe in adjustment, alignment?
Again after 5 rotations, every tire will have been at every position.
