Scenario:

You push your luck and run out of gas on the road, you walk a few miles or maybe hitch a ride to get a gallon of gas.

What the heck do you do with a full EV under the same circumstances? Plug a solar panel into it?

You KNOW people are, or maybe have already been doing this to themselves in their full EV's...it's human nature ?
Call AAA- brought 5 gal…. I have never used it, but my wife does all too often. ? Better them than me ?

I went from a 125 mi commute to retirement . Swore I would never buy high dollar tires again, Uh, the 35/12.50 Toyo’s I replaced the like new 285/70 KO2’s with proved me a liar. ??‍♂
I have to trust my tires, doubly so when I'm on two wheels. The road won't know or care about my employment status when traction is compromised. Thus my policy of buying the best available for the vehicle in question.

And I do like the looks of the KO2s.

Tiny 32.8” KO2’s unacceptable, 35’s mandatory. The 59lb Toyo’s are the lightest 3 peak and have proven superior in wet and a better ride…. I had an ~3 week old 35/12.50 BFG grenade on my PU, Must have been run flat, warranty denied , BS- trucker habitually bumps tires including before starting home from work when it grenaded. The replacement I bought was the last BFG I will ever buy, I’m not lying to myself on this one. ?

i came here expecting new info, more the fool me bc almost all i see is whining, stale misinformation, and extrapolated anecdotes. really disappointing, thought this was one of the more thoughtful and reasonable forums.

i ran out of gas at the pump a couple summers ago. as in the pump had no more gasoline to dispense, because of some software glitch or hack of some pipeline hundreds of miles away. i invested in a Jerry can that week, to cover at least a couple of gallons to get my sorry ass back from my job to home ~40 miles away. I'd much rather depend on hooking up a solar panel or getting an emergency recharge pack (if and when such a thing is invented), or having the small regen engine others described, than strap a can of explosives to the side of my vehicle.

if we're talking freedom & self-sufficiency, depending on a massive infrastructure i have zero control over to deliver highly processed dino juice at my whim is about as far from that as i can imagine. dream a little bigger, guys.

Yeah, that use case doesn't really make sense. He would be better off renting a car for a trip that long. I mean, people have to really understand their use cases and see if it fits how they intend to use it. The state of charging infrastructure is really, really far behind the rate of EV adoption - unless you are in certain states.

I love my 4XE and my use case fits it perfectly, but I am not ready to go full electric for reasons like your son experienced and the lack of infrastructure to charge it. At least with a 4XE I still have the exact same 2.0 engine that the other JL's have and am not worried about range or finding chargers.

Guy in my neighborhood has a Tesla and my nosybutt doesn't see one of those Tesla wall charger things in his garage, so I am assuming he charges with the regular 110V. I guess if you are charging each night, just what you expended that day, then it will be fine, but I am not ready to have to plan my long-distance trip around which chargers I can access along the way.

One thing that happens too frequently is if there are even chargers around, it is almost 50/50 if they are even working.
The Tesla charging network is vastly superior to the government ? show, that's why Ford and others are changing to the Tesla charging.

Are you saying there's a government charging network??

My son bought an EV this summer, a Chevy Bolt. He lives in the snow belt and just changed from the traction less EV specific tires to winter tires with the special rubber compound and tread needed for snow and ice. The tires are the exact same size as the original tires, but they dropped his EV range by 50 miles.

He has to do a 300-mile one way trip for National Guard duty every month (600 miles total). In the Chevy Trax he owned previously it would take him 4 hours to drive 300 miles (80 mph speed limit). Now it takes him 10 hours to make that 300-mile drive. He can drive for 80 miles, then charge for 1 1/2 hours, then do that over again until he gets there. So, that makes for 20 hours of driving to make his 600-mile trip every month. He just texted me yesterday that he is going to trade in his EV and go back to gasoline.
The Chevy Bolt isn't meant to be driving those distances, they are more a commuter vehicle, the charging specs is one of the slowest. Like everything else sure you can road trip it, but should you?

I'm still struggling with the economics of EV's of any kind. Until they get range and charge times equivalent to IC then I just can see the masses adopting this willingly. Good luck Stellantis but I certainly hope they have some IC's in holding for future vehicles.
My experience with a 4xe rental: Had wanted to check out the EV range and what it was like. Had no charge when I got the rental. Tried to charge the 4xe but the chargers they had in the area weren't compatible. I like the concept but it would have cost me almost $8 (.48 kwh) to charge and go 20 miles. My diesel would have been about $5.50 a gallon out here and can go over 22 mpg even on the 37's. The 2.0 was barely getting 20 mpg on tiny street tires. It's too bad they've discontinued the diesel and I'm glad I have one. Other than the 392 I don't like the existing available options.

Generally pay to charge is a premium, EVs are meant to charge at home, there are places that offer free charging.

EV range sort of don't matter to some people that never or rarely go on long trips, and that's a lot of people.

The problem is the government is forcing everyone not to buy gas vehicles.

Rental companies offering the 4xe is nonsensical at best.

I''ve see people with rental Teslas struggling to figure out how to charge, Toronto charging is a Hodge Podge of apps, payment methods, parking enforcement, time limits, Teslas blocking chargers.

if you don't have it figured out, someone that don't charge and worse unfamiliar with the city like most rental car drivers, it can be a complete ? show.

I know the 4xe has a weight penalty, in terms of the hybrid battery pack, but it isn't that much heavier than its ICE-only brethren.

With respect, you weren't driving it like a rental, were you? If not, possibly there was something else causing the low MPG that you observed. I won't claim to know how all of the technology functions in the PHEV Wrangler.

The worst fuel mileage I've recorded with my 2.0T has been 24 MPG, and that's only when the heavier snow tire/wheel combos are mounted, and by extension when there's winter-blend gasoline in the tank (which has reduced efficiency.) Granted, I have a conservative right foot, and the engine has been fed 91+ octane only from new.

With the all-seasons installed and especially if I fill up my Jeep with ethanol-free fuel, 26-27 MPG is easily attained and maintained.
