Unless you're using a flip phone (and even then) your location is being tracked and sold, which you gave permission for when signing up for your cellphone service.

Yes, you absolutely can remove all this stuff from your Jeep if you want, but don't think that your location isn't being tracked anyways (and has been for *years*).

In most cases, it's not unique - John Smith - but rather part of an aggregate, and usually only has demographic and psychographic markers on it.

I.e. it's pretty easy to track or buy a dataset of the location habits of White Men Aged 40-50 who buy off-road vehicles, make $200K-300K/year, travel domestically frequently, and enjoy offroad and outdoor sports.

It's much more difficult/expensive to get ahold of John Smith's specific travel (and unless you're breaking the law, not many people care anyways, tbh).

You don't have to take out the dash you're just taking out the head unit it's really not that involved of a job. And yeah you'll lose a bunch of services but if you're like me and you don't use them then it doesn't matter. I still can't figure out why manufacturers think they need to supply crappy navigation anyway when Google maps and Waze exist. Also use my phone for music so I have no interest in paying more money for satellite radio.
copy, yeah i don’t use basically anything but the FM radio and that can be replaced by other functionalities. Thanks for your response on this…when I do it I’ll comment back!

The crappy is navigation is for them, not you. It’s running whether you use it or not, and the compiled data is sent to them.

Weird. My Jeep app has never had those details.
my buddy did not think his did either but it does. maybe it is new in 2024. regardless when I open the app it tells me they are working hard to enable my connect services and to contact an advisor but when I close that part out it shows my vehicle health report and miles and fuel level etc and then service and maintenance including service history and I am the only one who has changed my oil...
below that it shows All Trips and I can scroll through those and it shows everytime I started my jeep and pulled it out of the garage..with full details....crazy

Right but that's what I expect my phone to do but that doesn't mean I want my Jeeping data being sold by Stellantis to make money off my data on the backend.

People get this weird idea that just because I'm okay with one thing means I should be okay with everything and that's not how it works. I don't even use my real name on my Google account for my phone. I have no payment information saved into my Google account either. My email address is a throwaway just for this phone account I couldn't even tell you what it is. Every time I get a new phone I create a new entirely fake Google account for it.

Yes it means I have to put all those phone numbers in again manually on the new phone and no I don't care.

I will never log into two different phones using one Google account.

Yes some things I have to deal with but that doesn't mean I have to deal with everything. I might not be able to eliminate all the back end profit that companies make from me but I'm damn sure going minimize it the best I can.

And no I don't have a Facebook account. Technically I do have a Instagram account which is part of meta/facebook but it's under a fake name using made up information. And I only access it in a browser that uses a container system that keeps it separate from all my other browsing.

Does anyone actually read the Jeep App software terms of use, privacy notices, and statements about data collection and privacy in the Jeep owners manual for the UConnect and SiriusXM systems?

No?

Maybe now is a time to start...

I get that. It just always makes me laugh that some people on this forum are willing to rip their Jeep apart to remove an antenna and probably used their iPhone to search YouTube for the videos on how to do it.

You're obviously free to take whatever measures you deem necessary to reduce, but I'm here to tell you (as a digital marketer for the past ~20 years) that Google's not the only one tracking you. Your phone (all of them) are tied to your cellular account, and unless you're on a prepaid burner, that's being tracked to you. And it's tracking your location, reporting it to your carrier, and your carrier is 100% selling it to the highest bidder.

Again, it might not be "you" specifically, but the data gets fed into whatever aggregate profile you fall into (based on what they know about you).

Your license plate gets scanned by cameras all over the place in various intersections.

If you've got apps installed on your phone, they're likely collecting bits and pieces of data.

There are entire companies that exist (called data brokers) which buy up any bits of data they can from wherever, and then they stitch it together.

Not 100% individual, but aggregate, and based on assumptions. Check out Placer.ai (https://www.placer.ai/), it's one that we use. They collect data on millions of devices, and can tell where you live (based on where your phone is every night), where you work (where it is during the day), places you frequent, etc. They collect the data from hundreds of sources and stitch it together. Again, not you, specifically, but people who match various demo- and psychographic.

I like to think I'm doing my part to make the dataset a little less reliable and valuable which is fine by me. Anything you can do is better than throwing your hands up and letting them run wild with your data in my opinion. At least make them work for it.

Remember folks just because you are paranoid doesn’t mean someone is not out to get you.

I looked in my owners manual and it does not say they are going to spy on me..in the Sirius hand out it does say they will collect information so they can send you promotional information on siriusxm but beyond that I did not see a whole lot that made it sound like they could sell your information. Not saying it is not hidden in there but I did not see it and I looked.
