We can all thank Obama and the insidious EPA for this nonsense. This auto start/stop shit that cannot be disabled permanently or programmed off as a default is an obamanation!!!
No need to make this political.

Ha Ha. We're stubborn.

My wife drives the JLU, but neither of us like the "ASS" feature. Old habits. If they just would have added a switch where you can set it to off once and not have to disengage it every trip....

Yeah, if truth in advertising were real, they would have had to call it ASS.
If the ESS feature was able to default on off, it would not technically be able to be utilized in the calculation of gas mileage. This is a classic overreach of federal government.

mwilk02, i do not think that is correct...... my panamera has a button that turns ESS off.. and leaves it off until you change the setting.
it does not reset every time you start the car with the ignition like the jeep does

The ESS feature quit working on it on. I get a warning indicator every time I start the Jeep, but the auto stop, start does not engage.

Have tried an auto and disliked that I had no control except by pushing the button.

But, I love ess with my 6 speed, when coming to a light and I know it'll be a long one, I just release the clutch and it shuts down. I can prestart it just by pushing that sexy 3rd pedal down.

There are at least two commercial units for "DISABLING" the JL's ESS--

1)--SUPERCHIP FLASHCAL--

2)--SMARTSTOPSTART--

Not counting the hood push button-relocate-

SO three separate methods of disabling the wonderful ESS-

You can control it similarly on an auto. Don’t push your foot all the way to the floor on the brake and the engine will stay on. If I know a light will be short, I put less pressure on the brake. If I know it will be long, I just stand on the brake pedal.

I've actually used HP Tuners before on other Jeep vehicles to disable ESS. You do have to flash a "tune" with the change, but they have the ability to disable it all together or even just set the default button status to disable on startup for those who still want it but would prefer it default to off.

That won't work or those of us living among hills. Works great at level stops though. Here's what I wish:
1) The ESS needs a 3 second delay before activating. A simple stop sign stop should not result in ESS activating.
2) There's another thread on this but do y'all know that if the ESS aux battery goes dead you CANNOT jump start! It's complicated, but the computer needs to see the Aux battery voltage or it will not allow the start circuits to activate. We need a guinea pig to jump N1 to N5 and see if any ECUs leak out their magic smoke.

What is being said by guys with dead batteries is the jumpers need to remain on the vehicle to charge it for 5-10 minutes. So instead of jump start we're jokingly calling it chump start.

Thinking magazines or jeep will give us the skinny sooner or later on this. Also lots of engineers who do overlanding/expeditions will have this figured out very soon too.

I don't know, the ESS does not bother me one bit, but I have a manual trans and can control it better.
