That is not normal and I would be concerned. I’d pull the cover and see what is going on.
I’ve had that much shavings on the magnetic drain plug when I changed mine, so I guess it’s normal? I have the LSD 44 rear.

Any updates on this? I’m about to change my differential gear oil soon
I put more oil in it and going to run it for another 10k miles to see if I have the same amount if large flakes. I’ll post and update when I make it to that point. I only drive my vehicle maybe once a week as I have a take home car for my job.

I changed mine in both axles on my 2019 JLUR at 5K miles and the rear was the worst I have ever seen (you can search for the UOA test results I posted). I replaced the OEM oil with Amsoil Severe Gear--75W-110 in the front and 75W-140 in the rear.

It took 1.3QTs in the front and 1.6QTs in the rear.
Question for anyone on volume... I swapped fluid and took the opportunity to upgrade my diff covers. I went with the motobilt covers. I filled fluid until it ran out the fill hole. I was able to put more fluid than the 1.3/1.6 that everyone notes. Is that a bad thing? good thing? doesn't matter? should drain some out? Front took about 1.5 and rear was about 1.9....

Motobilts websites shows 1.45 qts rear and 1.03 qts front, which doesn't match anything i've found.

I looked in the owners manual and it notes fluid type but not volume.

sorry if this is a dump question. 20 years ago I destroyed a honda accord because I was supposed to fill the tranmission until the fluid ran out... but it takes a while for the fluid to fill all the spaces between the gears and I ended up underfilling it. oops.

There have been some variations between what has been required/needed with different axles/covers/models. The Motobilt covers **appear** to have more capacity than the stock covers due to the shape they have and they are "blown out" a bit versus the very tight contours of the factory covers. If it was filled to the bottom of the fill hole, I am confident you are good.

Ok. That was my thought... but didn't want to make assumtions. Like you said, it appears... like it would logically take a little more fluid. So I wasn't surprised. Wasn't sure if the fill hole rule still applied. Thanks for responding back.

I looked really hard at the Motobilt covers and would have likely bought them if a friend of mine did not have the Metal Cloak ones for a steal (sold his Rubicon). Motobilts look like they are indestructible!

Thats funny because I debated hard getting the metalcloak ones because of their front skid that covers that stupid front drain bolt. The motobilt ones are tanks though. They are all the protection I need. I ordered a couple of extra drain plugs just in case and threw them in the glove box.

When you pulled the stock covers off did they have the reusable gaskets ?

Also how did you paint the red logo like that? I have those covers on order.

The rubicon at least does have a reusable gasket. I had bought some gasket sealer just in case but there was a really nice reusable one already. I cleaned it off and made sure there was no damage. It looked perfect and no leaks. It looks almost identical to a lube locker gasket but black.

I primed and painted the covers black and then filled in the logo with an oil based paint pen.

Did mine today, 11k miles, rear was jet black but front wasn’t bad at all, no metal on the drain plug magnets but a tiny bit of of grey sludge was there. Overall very easy to do, used Royal Purple 75w-140 in the rear and then finished the bottle in the front before topping off with 75w-90. After adding the additive in the rear I used less than 3 1qt bottles total.

I did my rear differential today at just under 15,000 miles. I have the 220 RBI (D44) with the LSD. According to the Amsoil website capacity is 3 pints and calls for 2.37 oz of Mopar limited slip additive.

Old lube was BLACK and I had the expected metal fur on the magnetic drain plug. No metal chunks.

I put in Amsoil Severe Gear 75w-140. I went with this weight as I do haul a small travel trailer on a fairly regular basis and it can get darn hot here.

The differential in fact took right at 3 pints before it started dribbling out the fill hole. I also put in 2.5 oz of the limited slip additive. I should be good to go for awhile.

I changed my diff oil today in MY*JLUR. I used valvoline synthetic 75w90. After doing the change I noticed the bottle had a note one it that said it was for limited slip. I have a standard open differential.

Is this a problem?

No, you should be fine.
