Thing is, the thread has almost 600 posts, not even counting the links to other sites and other threads. Lots of them contradict each other, and it's also hard to evaluate which ones are correct and which aren't. (... for any arbitrary definition of "correct".)

For these things, I just stick with what the manual says. For my rig, that's 75W85 in front and 75W140 in the rear. The Valvoline pouches are great, and Amsoil has them too. Valvoline meets the GL-5 API specification in the manual, too.

Sorry, when was that?

Where did Dana make this recommendation? Some technical bulletin someplace, maybe?
Here are the specification sheets from Dana:

DS Rear - https://d3qx1uccksbb2n.cloudfront.net/docs/SPECSHEET-JL-REAR-UD44A-D44A-42019.pdf

Pretty sure the owners manual states the lower viscosity but it is better to go on the high side. It offers better protection and wear. Same reason I don't use 0w in the engine, despite what the cap says.

The M200 is also referred to as a JL Dana 44. Read the current, Dana spec sheets in regard to "Lubricant Type" to use for the Dana 44, as recommended by Dana.

In regard to the JL:

JL Rubicon = Dana M210 Front / Dana M220 Rear

JL Sahara (Standard) = Dana 186MM Front / Dana M200 Rear

JL Sport = Dana M186 Front / Dana M200 Rear

JL Sahara & Sport Option = Dana M220 Rear

As an option, the JL Sahara and Sport are also available with a Dana M220 rear axle which comes as a part of the limited slip differential.

Don't get sucked into @Rhinebeck01 games. It's always the same insults, criticisms and name calling.

It's really getting old.
He also “edited” his response to me after calling me an “ASSHAT” (although his original post is still visible In my response to him)

Apparently advising OP not to blindly go by simple suggestions and or do your own DD was grounds for insults?! (or compliments ??‍♂ (not really sure what an ass hat is)

I guess he changes his mind on name calling…as much as he does on oil recommendations?!

If he gets me a key fob or one of those lock cap thingamajigs with ASSHAT on them ….id be willing to forgive ?

When I came to the forum (as a jeep noob) looking for information about my first diff fluid change, I found that big long thread. It's absolutely ridiculous to have to go read that whole thing. I understand you have to form your own informed opinion based on all the evidence sometimes, but does it need to include all 600 something posts with the unnecessary stuff in there too? I mean it took me 3 hours plus to dissect that thing.

Yes, real pain to read through a lengthy thread...

Indeed that thread is a lengthy one.... however there is a wealth of info in that thread, in regard to dealing with the diff fluid change.

There is a lot more to the diff fluid changes then just what fluid to use.

Were it me, I would rather work through/read a long long thread and learn history, recommendations, caveats, recommended tools, hints, etc., then to quickly read through a short thread that says/offers very little and with posts by fewer forum members... by those forum members that are likely not as knowledgeable as those that have done the Wrangler / Wrangler JL dance for years.

With that said, along with a recommendation, I myself also point noobies to the lengthy threads as I know, though a long thread .... the reader will be far better off reading that entire thread, then other shorter threads. More reading means you end up more knowledgeable..

I just changed my fluids. Easiest thing in the world to do.

I use 75W-90 in the front and 75W-140 for the rear, just because I have the towing package and my LSD will be used more in sand.

Even if you choose 75W-85 or whatever the Jeep manual says you will be fine. Some here recommend using what Dana says - and that is no doubt good - and it may be different than what Jeep says in it's manual, but if paranoid (understandably) about any warranty issue.... it will be Jeep that will be analyzing and fixing it, not Dana.

Oh yeah, I used the bottle version and the squishy container versions - go with the squishy containers ;)

@Gunfighter

Your JL will be just fine with the gear oil choice you made for it... Were it me though I would run both 75-140 just because Dana recommends it.

Most JL's see little to no front diff use so diff fluid choice for front for those JL's is kind of a moot point.

Yes, diff fluid change is easy easy.... but a guy gal can have/see issues.... Example they drain the diff fluid and they then, cannot get the fill plug loose/off. They should have removed the fill plug first but they did not know that was a prudent thing to do.

As for warranty concerns.... dealer is not going to .... or will they bother to try to ascertain what fluid you actually used.

Tell dealer what they want to hear you used / what they/Stellantis wants you to use ....and that is all you need to do. Don't ever give the dealer any ammo for their gun.

Just don't spew you used something they don't encourage, as yes, the dealer will undoubtedly run with it so to speak.

Yes, flexi containers are terrific to use!

Right, as for the warranty situation - they may ascertain, they may not. Anyway you will notice I used the phrase " but if paranoid (understandably)".....

I get that @Rhinebeck01 is not all hugs, and hula hoops, and rainbows. But if you can get past that, he adds a shitload of good knowledge (mostly patiently, sometimes not) to this forum. There’s always the ignore button for anyone that triggers you.
