My new(ish) to me 2019 JL Sport, has me somewhat concerned. Was in traffic for close to an hour, bumper to bumper crawl, hot & sunny in the city, pulled into gas station to fuel up, and my jeep marked the ground with about 8-10 oz of rad coolant. Opened hood and tried to find where it was leaking from and couldn't really locate source. Reservoir still showed half full, at bottom of safe level. No warnings on dash, no aggressive fan noise (tough to hear over loud music), just a quick sprinkle on the lot. Continued onto destination with one eye on temperature, while heat was on max.

My question to people on this forum is, what if anything, have you done to cool your engine bay? Removed insulating blanket on hood? Replace hood to vented? added side vents? Gladiator fans? Fan contollers?

This site is famous for cheap hacks, lets hear yours...

thanks in advance

If it is the 2.0 check the reservoir bottle where the hose connects on the side. I have seen this as a failure point in other posts. The plastic nipple seems to fail where it connects with the reservoir bottle. The other place to look is the water pump as the 2.0 had a known issue with improperly torqued water pump bolts from the factory.

Before trying to make changes like pulling the sound insultation, you need to check the health of your cooling system first...

How many miles?

When is the last time the coolant was flushed?

Obviously inspect the cooling system, make sure the fans turn on, no leaks, fluid level is correct.

You might need a water pump or a thermostat if the fans are turning on and you don't have any leaks.

Alec,
Picked up the jeep at 103,000 km., 107,000 km on it now. Was told all the fluids had been changed, as well as clutch replaced under warranty at 100,000 kms.

Coolant temperature stays just below half mark when warm, no fluctuations.

If you want to keep you 2.0 or 3.6 running cooler you best and only solution is the RPM Extreme JL fan controller.
Before the fan controller I was seeing 235+ .
After the fan controller 212 is the hottest I have seen on trails in Moab.
Most of the time it is 200 or less.
My coolant and oil temps are down by 25 to 30 degrees.

Larry, thanks for the reply, I read through a few threads of differing suggestions, and am sorta confused on what works and what does not. Do you think the fan upgrade is necessary with the RPM controller? The thought of more air throughput appeals to my sense of engineering.

thanks

On your coolant reservoir check the top of the tank where the hose is. They are known to crack at that point and will only leak coolant when up to temp as the bottle is pressurized then. The other spot to check is the hose on the top of the radiator with the tee on it. It will leak from there as well. Check around the pulleys and coolant tank side of the engine for any orange spots.

The gauge doesn’t really work that great, mine never seems to fluctuate. I use the actual coolant temp in place of my speed on the cluster. Provides a much more accurate depiction of what the real temperature is

Yes thee is a difference. The 2,0 and Etorque versions have done very specific leak points for coolant. The 2.0 at the black coolant tank seams, under the coolant tank, at the water pump, and the Etorque adds a failure point near the “48v battery “. I don’t have experience with the 3.6 specific coolant failure points.

I spent 6 months trying different things to get the temps down inducing pusher fan, running with the hood unlatched. Nothing I did made any difference at all.
Then I came across Jon at RPM Extreme. He was making the fan controller for JKs and I ask if he can make one for my 3.6 JL.
A week later he had one tested and sent one to me. It has been a game changer.
Try this. Go to your off road page where you can monitor your real temps.
Run you A/C at full blast. This will turn on you Rad. fan at a high rate of speed.
What you will see is your coolant temps are much cooler because you now have air flowing though the radiator and that the hole problem. Factory set up is to little to late.

I agree, I installed the Extreme RPM Fan Controller and it is a game changer. My Jeep has never run so cool.

You didn’t mention what your engine temp readings were, but from the statement above, you were most likely running with the A/C on. And since it hasn’t been asked yet, are you sure this isn’t just normal A/C condensation (water)? It’s hard to tell from the photo, and it’s too late to see if the spill is in fact colorless, but it appears so. It should be easy to reproduce the event if it is condensation. Take the vehicle out on another hot day and run it slowly around town (not on the highway) with the A/C on high for at least 30-40 minutes, stop the vehicle on a similar clean surface and shut the engine off. If another spill occurs, use a white paper towel to dab some of the liquid up and inspect it for color, smell, and viscosity. If it’s anything other than water, it should have a color, a possible smell and have some degree of slipperiness.

yep, just a cursory glance and it looks like condensation...but I'm just spitballin'
