It finally happened.
Top off, doors off with zero percent chance of rain…. Downpour!
Doing 70 down the expressway kept me pretty dry but doing 20 in my neighborhood, haha well… not so much! I got soaked!

A few towels and a fan in the cargo area took care of it. Just totally unexpected.

Good times.
Gotta love Florida!

lol this happened to me but I only had both front panels off.

I was taking my two closest friends with me to Galveston for a few hours and decided to remove both panels. We went through a down pour and it was comical because the backseat passenger didn't get wet at all and us up front only got slightly wet. I was driving 60mph, so yea not much rain got dumped inside.

It was hilarious though, because it was a lot of screaming and laughing LOL! Every time the traffic slowed down we got more wet and more giggly. LOL...almost forgot about that experience. Thanks for the reminder! ? ??

I made a list of emergency places to go when rain comes out of nowhere - it hasn't happened to me (yet), but I like to think I'm ready.

Admittingly on an expressway your kinda' outta' luck except for waiting it out under an overpass (if one is available). But my short list for surface streets are:
  1. Shoulder under a bridge (not often available on surface streets)
  2. Gas station overhang (over pumps)
  3. Bank drive thru (especially good on weekend afternoons and Sundays)
  4. Self Serve car wash (typically are not busy when raining)
Let me know if anyone has others. Would love to lengthen my list.

These are also my "...in case of hail..." events which is super rare in my neck of the world.

Parking enclosure like a mall or hospital. Wow this reminds me of when I was an everyday motorcycle rider. This list also works for people driving fancy cars when it’s going to hail. The bridge Underpass has always been my go to living in California though.

On a beautiful day with no rain in the forecast, I had the top and doors off and met some friends to go out in their boat. On our way back, black clouds appeared and absolutely dumped on us. We were completely soaked by the time we got back to the dock. The Jeep had taken it while full naked. There was water standing in the cup holders, dash holder, floorboards and speaker.

I used a shop vac to remove all I could. I soaked nearly every towel in the house pushing them into the seats and floor carpet. I parked it in my garage overnight with fans and a de-humidifier. Fortunately, the next day was hot and full sun, so I parked it outside and it finished drying before the next evening.

Gotta admit to spending a few hours under an insterstate overpass during an unexpected monsoon (and once in Dakota when hailstones the size of a quarter were pounding down). Won’t even mention motorcycle trips where I’ve actually slept under a (very) rural insterstate overpass?

I can't tell you how many times this has happened to me.
I should rent out the Jeep to local farmers.

This happened to me with my old TJ. It's a rite of passage for Jeep/ Off road people with open top rigs.

30+ mi from home, on some back road coming home from the local off road park after a successful day of wheeling. My doors were at home. Coming over the crest of a hill, I look across a valley to the next horizon and see the black clouds, and lightning:
"Whoa... that's cool. What a crazy pictu-"
And that's when I noticed that storm was rolling right across my path. FUCK.

Checked GPS, literally nothing between me and home. Just farms and houses. No gas stations or shelter. Punch in to find the nearest gas station- 8 miles. FUCK. It's going to be close.

Downshift from 5th to 3rd, and hammer it. Doing 70 in a 40 hoping to get to shelter before I get drenched. I made it 5 miles before the first drops hit, thought about stopping to put my top up, but decided to try to push on. Roads were empty and with any luck I might make it. I wasn't getting too wet doing 70.
Almost miss the turn, downshift back to 3rd, slam the breaks, make the corner onto a small bridge. It's really pouring now. Wipers aren't doing anything. Thunder and lighting overhead. Start to get wet. But I can see the gas station.
That's when the yellow Lancer in front of me decides to slow down. 20mph. WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU.
They come to a full stop and hesitate for a good minute. IT'S A FLASHING RED LIGHT. MOVE!
I see them laughing as they turn and take off down the road. Whatever. I cross the road and pull into the gas station, call my (then) gf:
Hey- is it rainning at home?
"No"
Does the forecast say anything about rain?
"No"
OK, can you please TELL THAT TO THIS FUCKING STORM THAT JUST CAUGHT ME WITH NO TOP OR DOORS?
"oh no"
Yep.
"No doors either?"
Nope.

So I put the top up and drove home. I was only kinda wet after that. Thankfully it was nice the next day so I left the Jeep open to air dry it.

I ordered the Bestop Canvas doors the next day. Worth it.

Fun story: I was tooling around on FB a while back and found a company that made "emergency rain doors" for Jeeps. They fold up like tents and go in a little sack/ case. I haven't seen anything from them since. Small company, American owned. I'll see if i can find them and post if anyone is interested.

5 years ago when I still had my JKU I took a trip to the TX coast for some camping and fishing for a weekend and went without my roof and doors. I was supposed to stay until Monday but Sunday around mid day noticed a mass of clouds offshore. I was able to find a spot on top of the dunes to get enough cell signal to pull up the weather app and sure enough a pretty big storm was rolling in.

I quickly broke camp and got off the beach asap. I thought I had beat it but when I hit interstate 37 heading out of Corpus I got caught in a downpour. I ended up sitting under an overpass for 45 minutes along with a couple of people in Slingshots. I got hit with rain several more times until I got north of San Antonio. Me, the Jeep, and everything was soaked. 4 more hours of driving with no roof and doors helped dry everything out a bit.

I have been caught a few times out in the rain.

One time in my CJ7 I was in a parade pulling a float and a stormed ?⛈? rolled in I took off for home which was not too far away, I had a friend behind me with the people from the float, needless to say the float was not designed for a thunder storm. Bu the time I got home all that was left was the trailer and a few boards.

Another time me and a buddy were out in my YJ and it started to pour, we were at a stop light and a van rolled up next to us and rolled down his window and offered us a roll of paper towels :CWL:. We just decided to just sit back and drive like nothing was going on. We did get a lot of people waving though...

Luckily not get caught in my TJ, and don't have my JL yet.
