I'm not much of a complainer. In fact, it is very rare. And I am quick to praise a vendor or company when they do something well, which usually is simply providing a good product or service at a reasonable price. But this one is an irritant and it is from a highly respected vendor with whom I have been a customer since I had my YJ in the 1990's. Yep, 30 years. It is from @Bestop which is one of the best Jeep vendors in existence, in most ways.

I tried to order a little parts kit....two simple bikini top straps with snaps on them, for $18, which I think is slightly steep, but ok. No biggie. So I called to order and the shipping charge was $15. I suggested simply putting it in an envelope and sending them via USPS, which should just cost a few bucks. Nope. the best they can do is Fed Ex for $15.

Sorry, Bestop, but this is ridiculous.

I will make the replacement straps myself.

If I worked for Bestop and took this call, I would get a manilla envelope, stick these in there, address it and put it on the business office's postal machine, add it to the bill, and send it USPS. It would cost a few bucks, tops.

But that would require someone to actually think and have a mind toward customer service.

NO WAY I'm paying $34 for two simple straps with snaps on them. That's just silly.

I love Bestop and their products. I'll continue to be a customer. But I regret seeing that employees are not empowered nor conditioned to make creative solutions, even if the customer gives them one on a platter.

As for the targa mesh top....It is awesome. It has lasted years and the straps just wore out from use. The top is one of the best options out there. So I'll give two thumbs-up for that piece of gear. I'll be figuring out the strap material and straps, likely from Amazon, and I should be able to make these for a few dollars.

Maybe Bestop should sell parts kits through an Amazon store. That'd be quick and easy and would avoid this kind of unusual and ridiculous pricing scenario.

Rant over.

So you want a company that efficiently ships hundreds of packages a day to change their standard operating procedure because you dont want to pay shipping?

Absolutely understand your frustration and this is an excellent example of why the postal system is dying. The probabe reason that they insist on shipping through a ‘private’ courier is tracking and delivery assurance. Way too many instances of scams, improper delivery, etc. that a company either can’t be compensated for or is way too expensive to get tracking using the postal system. FedEx, UPS, etc. either offer delivery assurance included or for way less than the postal system.

I hear ya! But, they're far from the only company that rapes folks on shipping charges.... it's common.
I just received a Trektop Glide from them. Two large (heavy) boxes. Free shipping, although I'm sure it was baked into the price 😉
You know its expensive to ship things right? And that "Free Prime shipping" on Amazon isnt actually free right? No one is raping you on shipping charges, they just shouldnt be expected to lose money on shipping, if they offer free shipping on high dollar purchases its because they have already figured in shipping costs into their profit on those orders.

Its insane the entitlement of the average consumer these days.

I have a fishing rod rack that uses a piece of rubber to keep part of it closed. That piece wore out after many years of service. The part cost $3.50, it is the size of ball point pen, weighs 2 ounces and cost $15 to ship. The vendor says $15 is the lowest his computer system will allow for shipping.

I bet you can probably find the same or similar rubber at a local store for like $5 and have some left over for when it fails again.

You are correct, It is a part that is used primarily in the boating industry and although I can find the item for about $6 the hard part has been finding the correct size.

@DanW , I feel the same way, with shipping charges, especially from eBay.
But, I have to side with Bestop on this one. Efficiency, simplicity, and speed. Much simpler to slap a shipping label to a prepaid box, toss items inside, and wait for someone to pick it up, with all the other packages.
Your way will take more time. Plus, someone will have to drop it off at the post office. The U.S.Postal Service is a.pain to deal with, and ineffective at best.

Shipping costs are ridiculous. But if a company ran a business the way each individual customer wanted for each individual order, they would be out of business.
This. But first they'd jack up regular prices to offset higher overhead costs.

Nice spin. Read it again, but this time read for detail.

Let me help you, in case it is difficult . I don't want to pay exorbitant shipping on a very small parts kit that can fit in a small envelope.

No, they would not.
