I can’t speak to the functionality of the vents because I don’t own a wind tunnel but they do address a major design problem of the JK:

Boring.
LOL. I suppose a barn shaped vehicle is boring..

I don't own a wind tunnel, but I have helped with setups and models in one at Cal Poly Pomona and a couple at Rockwell in El Segundo, witnessed numerous tunnel runs and visited all the tunnels at NASA Langley in VA. But I still don't know what it's there for. LOL.

Missed attempt to move heat from the batteries due to ESS use? Just an alternative guess

The vent and contouring look great. The vents and the new grill make the JL 100% better looking than the JK imho. Hate the JK flat slant grill.
Yeah, but when the JKU came out, those 4 doors sold like hot cakes and put a lot of value back into the Jeep brand. Who knows if the Jeep brand would be around if not for the Unlimited.

I agree with that 100%. I just thought it was fugly from the get go. I absolutely can appreciate a nicely built JK. I just think the JL is way better looking right out of the box.

The 2 Door JKs still look good. Like a Jeep. The 4 doors starting to look fugly.

The JL is nicer to our eyes, it is just styling for this decade. The JLU will look ugly in a few years.

The 2 doors age better because Jeeps have always been 2D.

That vent is there for several reasons.

I read somewhere that Jeep added the fender vents to allow air to escape and reduce hood flutter at highway speeds. Those who owned a JK know all about Jeeps and hood flutter.

Personally, I believe the vent was also added as a design element to better integrate the increased rake of the windshield. If you look at the lines on the sheet metal crease behind the side vents, they match perfectly the new angle of the windshield, creating one continuous upward line from the front fender to the roof. Breaks up that space and provides a “lighter” feel to JL’s design.

I like the vent and theorizing it does not have a function is splitting hairs. Sometimes there are design elements that don’t make a lot of sense to us until you see the physics/science behind it. For example, hood vents providing better cooling. Lots of data that show hood vents actually actually disrupt airflow and increase engine bay temps (while moving).
