Be aware... Keyfob battery will bite you.

I have never been stranded by my other Jeeps. Well, except that deep creek crossing but that one was on me. My point is my 2020 JL let me down in a way i've never seen. It would not start with the normal step on brake and hit start button. In fact, it would not start at all. Oh, the switch blade metal key will work, right? Where is the key switch? Was feeling pretty duh-huh at that point.

This time i was fortunate and able to buy a 2450 battery for the keyfob. What about the next time? Apparently, shelf life for a 2450 is 3 years for most makes. Looking around later, i found i got lucky buying DuraCell for their longer shelf life. Keeping a spare in the console now.

As per the owners manual, you can start the jeep using the fob to push the start button if the battery dies.

Just say to yourself... I'm not going to panic cause this thing is not starting.. I'm just going to use the fob end opposite of the panic button, to press firmly against the ignition button while I have the brake pedal firmly pushed down.

Keeping that spare battery in the jeep, with all that heat will kill it's shelf life. Usually, the Fob will start acting up, by saying it isn't being detected, intermittently, before the battery totally dies.

I once stopped and tried to help a lady get her Dodge Challenger started with a dead key fob and it was the same. I imagine it has a little inductive coil in it that can be enough to get the proper signal to let the Jeep realize the key is in the vehicle. I figure its probably similar to your tap and pay or even the window sticker RF transponders.

Yep I did exactly that and I was in the wilderness at the time.

It's an RFID chip in play... (housed in the end of the fob) At the thread mentioned above you can learn lots about the factory fob..

Funny... on Facebook there is a gal on a group there that has glued the JL, RFID chip to her long, artificial fingernail. She starts her JL daily with a finger push.

Yes, all you need is just the tiny RFID chip out of the factory fob to start your JL. No circuit board or battery is needed..

You know, with all the tech savvy thieves out there I almost want the fob to be dead. Old school tech FTW.

The Jeep even has a pop up in the dash that says the FOB battery is low. Saw it a couple weeks back. We went on a road trip and brought both FOB’s and the one that is the spare has never had the battery changed was in the Boss’s purse and ever now and then it would detect that one and flash the message.
