It's an RFID chip in play... (housed in the end of the fob) At the thread mentioned above you can learn lots about the factory fob..

Funny... on Facebook there is a gal on a group there that has glued the JL, RFID chip to her long, artificial fingernail. She starts her JL daily with a finger push.

Yes, all you need is just the tiny RFID chip out of the factory fob to start your JL. No circuit board or battery is needed..
Better than the dude that embedded the chip for his Model Y in his hand.

On another note the wife let her phone die while she was out with the MY and didn't have her key card. Luckily I wasn't too far away.

Just some more on these....
I had a battery leak about a year and change into ownership. It trashed the FOB circuitboard.

I ordered 2 new FOBs from an online Mopar dealer. It took quite a while to get them. I wanna say a couple months. They need the VIN, mileage, and a bunch of other information to verify ownership. So, change those batteries regularly.

Just buy a VW. On my Alltrack the battery in the fob lasts about 10-12 months. At least VW warns you for about 2 weeks that the battery is low. Trick is, with a dead fob battery, you need to place the fob where the old ignition key would go and then take your other hand and push the start stop button.

To top it off, unless you know the trick to pop off the cover to access the drivers door lock, you are out of luck to even get into it.

So glueing the chip to my nail will eliminate my batteries?

Had to do it. Do take a look at the threedom stuff Rhinebeck points to. I’m a repeat customer.

It will start as already mentioned but having a spare battery is always a great idea.

Our JLU is our 3rd vehicle now with keyless start, the other 2 have always warned when the fob battery is low, I would hope that Jeep added those few lines of code into the JLU as well.

“The Boss” in my household insists on keeping her 4Runner’s key in her vehicle at all times. I’ve replaced the battery at least three times. Never had to replace the battery in my 2019 JL key fob. I’ve tried to explain to her that it has proximity sensing which causes the 4R to constantly ping the key fob which explains her fob’s terrible battery life… but it’s more important that she doesn’t have to go through the trouble of removing her key from her vehicle.

Funny story- one night a bunch of hooligans “broke into” her 4Runner (they just opened the door because she never locks it) and rummaged through it. They took nothing of value and didn’t jack the car despite the keys being right there. We caught it all on our camera… they tried to open the door of my locked jeep and passed on it because it was locked - EVEN THOUGH IT’S A SOFT TOP!

Anyway, long story short, I’m quite familiar with the “press the key fob on the push button to use the RFID chip” method thanks to The Boss.

Right? They can warn you of low blinker fluid, they ought to be able to fit in a little convenience item like ignition key funtion.

My wife kept the key to her Corvette in a closet near the garage door. We couldn't figure out why the battery in the car would die so frequently. A friend called someone in a local Corvette club and he said if the key is in proximity to the car it "wakes" the car up and prepares it to be driven. We keep the key farther from the garage and haven't had an issue since.

Is this RFID chip vehicle/VIN specific? (One would think so, but this is Jeep, so it has to be asked.)

Apparently, thieves can ping the FOB and relay the data necessary to start a vehicle that uses our technology. My wife bought a little stainless steel container that we put all our FOBs in.

What is this 'owners manual' thingy you are talking about???
It's the book in the glovebox that perhaps 1 in 50 owners bothers to read.

Said differently, it's the ignored resource that keeps discussion sites like this one in business. ;)

I give these Faraday bags as Christmas gifts ever year. To a person, they're all grateful for and impressed by the simple and effective protection that the bags provide.
