New H7 battery installed. OEM felt blanket did not fit around it. Installed battery without blanket. What are forum members thoughts on blanket? Issues with battery running naked? Thanks.

This is a question that doesn't seek to challenge the advice given, but understand it better.

Why does Stellantis provide battery covers on H6 or H7 or even the Aux battery if they serve no purpose? Maybe they serve some purpose but don't warrant the express aftermarket expenditure.

It's not as if, given the nature of a sealed AGM battery that the protect from leakage. Do they regulate hot and cold temperature.

Are they simply the "garnish on the restuarant plate: there to look pretty, destined to be tossed? Are the a vestige of sealed lead acid batteries and other previous generations and variations of lead acid battery tech that might leak?

The battery cover is to help shield it from excessive heat. Heat is what kills batteries (other than the constant discharging/recharging from stop/start). You just don't notice it has degraded performance until the winter when it has to work harder. The factory batteries in WK1 grand Cherokee's frequently lasted 7-10 years because they were sheltered in the interior instead of the engine bay. My own 2011 still had the factory battery in it when we sold it in 2020.

That being said the blanket is still damn near useless, feel free to toss it. Your battery will die from our horrendous battery management systems long before heat becomes a factor.

I've read two completely different senerios:

1. To keep your battery from a rapid discharge in cold weather.

2. To thermally protect the battery from the engine heat.

I guess it could also protect the batteries components at the same time to help prevent short circuits.

I think this is another : "if the engineers designed it this way" question.?

Oh stop that. Discharging/recharging from stop/start doesn't damage batteries. A quick discharge immediately followed by recharging is AGM's wheelhouse.

What kills the batteries is the constant parasitic drain of electronics like proximity key sensors, the Start button, UConnect checking for updates, etc. AGM batteries are horrible at handling that sort of use.

And yes, battery blankets are 99% useless and largely unnecessary. The factory puts them on as a CYA move.

The useless blanket never protected my original battery from the heat. It crapped out, even though I trickle charged it regularly. I have eliminated the Aux Battery and put a larger main one in, a few years ago. No problem since then.
I for one, am not gullible enough to believe Jeep engineers know what is best for our Jeeps.

If someone likes the cover, I don't think there's anything wrong with keeping it. Does the cover protect the battery from heat in the summer, cold in the winter? I don't know, I doubt it, but let me tell you what I know; that cover is a mouse house delight. They absolutely love that fuzzy little cover and I love my little pet mouse. I'm gonna hold it and pet it and love it, I love my naughty little mouse, you're a naughty little mouse, hehe!
