My understanding was the military wears it with the union facing the direction of travel to signify heading into battle as opposed to retreating.
This is true. The American Flag can never be seen as retreating.

The military wears the flag on the right shoulder like it’s flapping in the wind but technically the union is facing the wrong way.
The difference is a stationary flag (on a wall) and one that is on something that is in motion (a uniform, a vehicle, etc).

Imagine the wind is blowing if you were carrying a flag. The stripes would blow to the left, it is correct on the right side. Excellent observation. I had to go look and see, and it’s not on my Jeeps.

So glad I asked and love the reason the flag is in that position. Adds even more pride in having it on the Jeep

at the same time feeling pretty ignorant for not knowing.
