Jeep turns off when sliding backwards

I assume this is normal, but my googling isn't finding anything.

Yesterday, we tried to see how far up a steep snow drift we could drive. Once we lost traction, we'd coast backwards back to the bottom.

Problem is it would kill the Jeep. Tried it several times. When sliding backwards to the bottom, it clunks to a stop, and I'd have to put it in park and restart. If this an autopark feature or something? My seatbelt was on, and doors closed.

It was still in drive. I would let off the gas and start sliding backwards.

It was still in drive. I would let off the gas and start sliding backwards.
Repeat test. When you start sliding backwards go to neutral.
