I know this is a much repeat theme, but I’m confused. I performed the delete by removing the negative to the aux battery, wrapped in tape and zip tied out of the way, removed the fuse…no problems for a week or so. Yesterday I noticed a popping in the radio when the auto start stop would’ve activated. Today, it started working again and now I have a check engine light on. Do I have a gremlin or did I do something wrong?

Sounds like your newly freed negative cable isn't totally insulated and/or secured.

This is why I went the route of installing an eliminator plugged into the security gateway, haven't messed with it since. https://www.autostopeliminator.com/

If you have an aux battery and don't want it to be part of your electrical system, I'd recommend removing it and the cables and any necessary fuses. Less potential for oops.

Removing AUX battery and fuse 42 DOES NOT DELETE AUTO START STOP. It removes small battery that often goes bad and takes out the main with it. Removing the small battery and fuse, removes small battery from the system, leaving only the main one to use for ESS. You have to either get an aftermarket ESS eliminator, stop it using Taser or JScan or press the button on dash every time you start the engine

@maestro5531 got it right.

But I’m curious why CEL popped up.

You may have removed the incorrect ground. Or you may have somehow disconnected the BMS, battery maintenance sensor.

IBS? Just clarifying for my own knowledge. Or the acronyms BMS and IBS are used interchangeably? Not trying to be a semantics d-bag, just trying to learn.

How does the auto stop eliminator compare to a superchips calibrator or tazer setting the memory of the buttons last position?

So, I re-wrapped the end of the aux cable, zip toed it back and cranked. The CEL has disappeared.

I have no idea if your check engine light and your removal of the ESS battery and Fuse 42 from your dual AGM battery JL, without commensurate turning off of the ESS system is the culprit for your check engine light. It's possible that they aren't related.

Fortunately @THAW does. https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/fo...t-it-pros-and-cons-please.143161/post-2995825

He is our residence supporter of running ESS on one battery in dual AGM battery JLs as being perfectly fine. In fact he's going to provide us with his cell phone number so if you or any one else have issues he can come tow you and fix your vehicle, aren't you Foster?

Joking aside, as I have maintained, best practices would have you not allow the ESS system to engage when you take this battery and fuse removal step. Whether you press the ESS off button or accomplish this task with aftermarket tech: it's all good by me.

Sure, everyone else does ESS with one battery. And yet I have to conclude that if Stellantis was going to raise the cost of purchase and ownership of your vehicle, which incorporating that second battery does, that they had reasons beyond what may be understood by most.

I have no issue with your removal. Heck I recommend it as one less thing to go wrong if you've already accepted no running ESS events.

@autotragic: you found my advice....funny....do share.

Let me say again, it is possible that your check engine light and the steps you took are unrelated.

I'm not sure, as I haven't used those other products.

The auto stop eliminator plugs inline to the security gateway and stays tucked in there under the module. It remembers the last setting of the Auto Stop button. I basically haven't had Auto Stop-Start enabled since I bought the Jeep almost 2 years ago, it's always turned off.

No CEL's, no need for additional cable or fuse pulls. My aux battery just lives life being used and recharged with the big battery.

My stock 21 JLR 6 speed manual has never had a Stop Start event. It has never worked and I have not attempted to figure out why. Once in awhile I get the "Stop Start not available" on the screen, nothing else. I am the original owner.

I’ve used the auto stop eliminator and now have a Tazer. The auto stop eliminator works great but is a one trick pony. The Tazer does many other things.

This is exactly the information that I came here today to find, so thank you!

When I recently replaced my main engine battery on my new-to-me '22 JLU Sahara, I did the Neg cable disconnect and pulled fuse 42. Now my Start/Stop works better than ever. I was confused.
