The JL manual trans (and clutch) really is garbage for this application. Don't try to defend it.
I went with an aftermarket clutch (South Bend Clutch has been great!) and 4.88 gears w/ 37s. It's night and day difference.....reminds me of my TJ. No complaints here!

Don't worry about him dude he's just a troll.

Notice that I didn't respond to him? I keep him on ignore. For a reason.

What South bend clutch did you install do you have the part number?

Yeah I was interested when you said it reminded you of a TJ I absolutely love the way a TJ drives.
The 4.0 with the 6-speed manual was really damn good.

Completely agree

It's a long story that I may post someday, but we found my wife's TJ that we sold 3 years ago and bought it back. They guy put like 300 miles on it.

It's a 2005 w/ the 6spd. Man I love driving that!

I still know the guy I sold mine to about the same time (35"s w/a 3.5" lift. 5spd), and I always remind him to let me know if he ever sells it!

I was under the impression Subarus weren't really known for fuel economy. I mean even today they're below average.
The 360 in my buddies Gladiator wouldn’t make double digit mpg. I realize that the Gladiator was a pickup and heavier but none of those low compression, carbureted V8’s got mileage for crap. If you got 13 out of that JEEP it would only be with a tailwind.

Sincerely, I'm glad it worked out.

Having to put an aftermarket clutch in a new vehicle because the OE and OE replacement are junk is NOT good for a brand's reputation. That shouldn't have to happen.

FWIW

I'm not actually a troll, but I challenge stupid statements and ideas, and that makes the people behind those statements and ideas really grouchy.

Oh and... when this is like the 3rd 2.0 vs 3.6 thread of the week, responses are likely to get a little punchy. These threads should be prefaced with a warning....put on your sense of humor, and thick skin. Don't take bantering about engines personally. 👍

MPG, I get the same MPG in a 2024 "advanced design jeep" (don't laugh) as I did with my 1965 ford Econoline with a 170ci straight six and one barrel three on the tree. Hard to decide which was more fun, the jeep, or the van with a bed in back...............

Living in Los Angeles were worried about our gas mileage and crappy gas prices. Looking for Rubicon two-door or four-door and I'm debating if I should go 4-cylinder or 6-cylinder. I drive 30 mi a day to and from work and I'd like to go out and explore so cal as much as i can. I know the six cylinder is reliable as hell, but what about the 4-cylinder? Does anyone have any pros and cons for it?
Test drove both 4 cyl and 6 cyl before making my purchase 4 years ago and went with the 2.0T 4 cyl. No regrets. It's very peppy and I'm averaging about 24mpg. But I do featherfoot it most of the time.

A 5 with a pre smog choked 71 360 , but still 8.5-1 cr might hit 13. The smog but also 8.5-1 with 175 hp 2 barrel/ 195 hp 4 barrel , sure they would get the same as a Subie

almost ?
My 5 (MD) with a pre smog HP 11-1 cr Chevy with ~ 130 hp more than the 71 pre smog 360 (245 gross) maybe 12 down hill with a tailwind. About Subi mileage ? :CWL:

Some like the simplicity of the 3.6, some like the complexity of the 2.0. Some are diehard 2.0 fanboys, some are diehard 3.6. Whichever you go with, do it based off driving both and making your own decision and not what someone on a message board says, especially when they talk about minivans..

Not sure what type of Subaru you had but I had a 01 WRX 5 speed that would get the high 20’s on the highway driving it like I stole it.
