392 Atlas transfer case install

Advance Adapters FINALLY has the correct parts to make this work (even if they do scab 3 adapters together ). I’ll save all the drama for another day, but the main case and some of the parts have been sitting on my shop floor since mid-December. Today the rest of the pieces showed up, so I left work early and dove right in. Here we go… (This won’t be a full step by step detail, but I will try to cover the points they don’t and any key details I think are important.

Original shipment-

The 392 specific parts that came today- (the instructions have you installing the bearing and spud shaft. My guess is this was their test fit one and they threw it in the box to get it to me ASAP since I’ve been religiously reminding them of my urgency- my current case is acting up)

What instructions they do have tell you to cut the stock transfer case cable to remove it . I found it much simpler to just pop off this ball end joint and remove it intact.

Here are some measurements of differences. Overall length is 4.25” longer, so rear driveline needs shortened. Front output is 5/8” further back, so that will need lengthened. If they wouldn’t have added the 3/4” adapter thickness, the front driveshaft could have stayed the same. (This first pic isn’t showing the extra 3/4” for the front adapter)

Based on my measurements, I’ll be losing 1/8” to 1/4” of spline engagement on the transmission output shaft (not all photos shown, let me know if you really want to see them)

Just test fitting the main adapter-

The stud position I used. It’s roughly 14 degrees of drop, stock was about 13 degrees. Each hole moves it 7 degrees-

Test fit with the case. It clears everything fine, much better than the diesel install we did in my buddies-

I knew things were going too smoothly. Case is in the vehicle. Went to bolt up the crossmember and the rubber isolator mount interferes in a few places with the Atlas adapter plate. One of many examples of the fact Advance has never put one of these in each respective vehicle, allowing their customers to be part of their R&D department. It would be relatively easy to modify things to make it fit, but I’ll wait to see what Advance says tomorrow. I was at least able to take measurements for driveline modifications, to get that process started.

Man, that's really impressive. I would have absolutely no clue where to begin something like this - and envy your ability to tackle it. I'm not in the market for a new transfer case, I just find it interesting. Good luck.

Dumb question. Does this mean you can rotate the transfer case on the transmission to relieve driveshaft angles?
I have a 2-door 3.6 M/T Sport and the rear driveshaft angle is rough already. A longer T-case will make it worse. I have a concept to swap to an Atlas, but didn’t consider it would potentially make my driveshaft angles worse or be able to rotate to make them better at the cost of clearance.

The rotation of the case can help the front driveline angle, but it doesn‘t change the rear at all. It pivots on the axis of the rear shaft output. In my application, my rear driveline will have to be shortened over 4”. On the 3.6’s, I think it stays close to the same, based on Advance’s statements (but I‘be found them to be wrong many times now).
