I'm coming from this as an 8 year owner of a JKUR; even on an Old Man Emu 2" lift I thought the highway driving was impeccable, something that was important to me doing many road trips a year for national forests or to get to good sea kayaking spots.

I recently test drove a 2-door JL that scared me based on how twitchy it was at interstate speed, but it was also lifted on a lift of unknown provenance; I've made an appointment to a local dealer to try out another 2-door that's bone stock tomorrow to see how that compares. For those who've tried and had a bit of lived experience with both, how would you say the 2-door's highway manners are, if 6+ hour trips aren't exactly uncommon occurrences for you? I'm planning on a 2" lift to fit 35s, but nothing beyond that.

I'm really wondering if the one I drove even had the track bar relocated or any attention paid to the caster, it was that bad.

My mallcrawler is stock and handles well at 70+mph. It's 500lbs lighter than a JLU of the same configuration. There is also a steering recall for Jeeps as well, once done on my JL it handled much better, but even before it never felt twitchy at highway speeds.

When I bought mine I thought it was really twitchy. I scrolled though the info screen and found my tires were at 44 PSI. I set them to 35 and all the weird highway handling issues went away. Most on the lot will have over 40 PSI in the tires, probably to keep the tires from flat spotting during transport and while sitting on the lot. So, check the tire pressure before you test drive.

As a new owner of a 2021 JLUR, I can say it handles much better than my TJ Unlimited (LJ). I've not tried a 2 door JL, but in researching lift kits, caster issues with mild lifts are easily fixed with longer lower front control arm. Chrysler sells them for less than $100/pair.

Replaced my lower arms.... Made a noticeable difference... Increased my caster approximately 1.0 degrees

2 doors can be made more stable with a bit more toe in, longer LCA, and lower tire pressure.

My 2 door JLR was twitchy until I did the longer Mopar lower control arms. Then it drove better than my new 4 door, which is saying a lot.

I have a 2022 JLR (2dr) with a 1.5in Clayton Overland lift on 315s. It is firm ride which I don’t mind… my wife does but that’s okay because she is rarely with me. Together we drive an X5. Long trips for us means towing my Jeep behind the RV if we are camping, or driving the X5 if we are hotel hopping.

I think it would get a bit tiring to drive more than 4 or 5 hrs per day in my 2dr on the highway but I wouldn’t change a thing. I love for off-roading and around town. Tomorrow I am going 200+ miles of highway driving (round trip) to get to a trailhead to ’wheel’ and that is a piece of cake. And I’m going topless… woohoo!

We test drove two, 2-door 2023 Wranglers...one 4-cyl and one 6-cyl at 65-70mph on a local interstate. The 4-banger felt very light and I couldn't "feel" the road. It almost felt loke the vehicle was floatimg above the roadway, The 6 was very different. I could feel the road and felt completely in control. We bought the 6.

After hearing all the horror stories about the poor handling of the two door, and how crappy the manual transmission is, I figured one thing out.

Jeep owners are spoiled and don't know what a bad handling vehicle feels like.

I have the OME 2" Heavy Load suspension on a 2dr JL and impeccable would be a good description of its highway manners. I suspect you test drove a shoddy lift with too low camber and/or overinflated tires. The JL is the best Jeep ever made for the highway (if it hasn't been ruined with a sub-par suspension).

My 2022 Willys 2 door travels down the highway great. It is not lifted. I did change the OEM steering stabilizer to a AEV/Bilstein and relocated it. I just replaced the rear stabilizer bar with a Hellwig for better control when loaded going down the highway. I've done numerous 200+ mile highway trips with no problems and enjoy the ride. I had multiple corvettes for trip cars. My Willys is not a corvette but I can now drive year round and dive off the pavement when I want to. It is my daily driver and trip vehicle. My original OEM MT tires are loud and I am waiting for the day they wear out so that I can replace them with quiet AT tires.

TLDR: My two door drives great on long drives.

While my 2022 Rubicon two door was bone stock, I drove 22.5 hours straight from Dallas, Texas to Petoskey, Michigan and then back to Dallas from Detroit, Michigan ~18 hours straight. I also drove from Dallas to Virginia and back over a weekend and had absolutely no issues with the highway handling.

I’m willing to bet a number of things were not setup properly, or wrong with the other two door if it truly felt that unstable.

I’m now on a 2.5” Metalcloak Gamechanger and 35’s since the jeep hit ~14k miles and it still handles great having ~21k on the odometer now. Tracks completely straight going 70+ on the highway in calm weather, but it’s definitely an active experience with cross winds. Perks of driving a lifted box on wheels with a solid axle!

I wheeled hard and often before the lift (unfortunately hadn’t had a lot of time the past year or so), and am just starting to see signs of steering wear. Upgrades coming…
