Please forgive me if this has already been addressed. My cursory search found nothing.

5-6 months ago I set my Tazer to remember the on/off state of my ESS button, which I set to “off.” Since a week after, the idiot light is on and i have the message to service the ESS system. Battery charge state is remaining within normal limits.

Is this normal? Thanks.

That doesn't seem normal. Does it go away when you remove the Tazer (assuming you got the extension cable and/or have someone with small hands to help)?
John, I have the extension cable, I just haven’t removed it because everything is within normal limits - for 5-6 months now.

Understood, but no, there's nothing normal about it. Hopefully @THAW's link helps.

Tazer shouldn't cause faults with the system. The chances are one or both of your batteries are going bad, or it could also be something as stupid as the hood ajar plunger switch being out of position from the bent frame.

My 2016 KL started throwing " Stop Start Unavailable - Service Stop Start System" message on the cluster a few days ago. This is in spite of the fact that I keep the ESS off using an OBD2 dongle that remembers the last set ESS position. Checking the battery with a reputable tester revealed that it was at 65% State of Health, which wasn't surprising since that battery was about 4.5 years old. Changing the battery made the issue go away.

Also, check if the metal mounting plate for the two plunger switches aren't bent. My 2018 JLU with eTorque started displaying the same error message one day, and it turned out that the plate had bent slightly to the point where the plunger switches weren't fully being depressed when the hood was down and closed. That was fixed by replacing the switches and then bending the plate back into proper angle.

What did you mean by "idiot light"?
Also known as Check Engine Light, Money Light, Malfunction Indicator Light, among other things.

Just explaining what "idiot light" means.
I don't think we're getting through to you. He said the idiot light was on and subsequently said no CEL, so we're trying to figure out what light is on. He's apparently using the phrase "idiot light" to mean something other than the CEL.

Ah, yeah, I misread that. My bad.

What did you mean by "idiot light"?
Foster, here is a quick copy/paste; I was referring to the ESS light on the dash cluster:

An "idiot light" is an automotive slang term for any simple dashboard warning light or indicator that turns on or off to signal a vehicle malfunction. Properly known as a dashboard warning light or tell-tale, these include common symbols like the check engine light, oil pressure warning, or battery charging indicator.

I believe @alphawolff has stated the "@!" dash light is triggered by all sorts of fault conditions; it's a canary in the coal mine. It could be related to Tazer, or something else. But, the timing is certainly suspicious.
