Having dealt with folks that commit violent crimes for a good part of my working life I can tell you the number that weigh the long term consequences of their actions enough to think about $1000 theft limits, or three strikes laws, etc are approaching 0%. Most aren’t thinking more than a few moments ahead of whatever they’re currently doing. For the most part, deterrence and rehabilitation are something we like to talk about to make ourselves feel better.
Seems like we both have similar backgrounds and I mostly agree with your statements. However, the $1000 theft limit was clearly thought through by many perpetrators in CA, as manifested by numerous ongoing thefts that were intentionally below the limit. Interestingly, many were pre-meditated and calculated down to the penny, resulting in thefts totaling $999.

I respectfully disagree with your statement about deterrence though...especially from someone in law enforcement. Locking one's car doors and home entries, installing alarms, installing cameras, owning a dog, obtaining a CCW permit, etc., are all things that people do every day to deter crime. Assuredly, none of these things are 100% failsafe, but I'm 100% certain that these measures do more than just make folks feel better. Are you telling us that you never lock your home or car when unoccupied? Really?

I don't get why people keep arguing in favor of locking gas caps in a thread about internally latching fuel doors... :headbang:
I'll bet a shiny nickel that flyer92 and the OP is the same person.

No I’m saying if I’m honest I do it to make myself feel better. I take precautions but dont believe a deadbolt will keep someone out. Most things only stop the lazy and inexperienced. I have all the things you mentioned to the point people might think I’m a drug dealer, but I’ll still say most of what we do is for our own peace of mind and maybe not based in reality. I have no argument with anyone in the thread. Do whatever makes you and your family sleep better at night. How many times did you hear people say, those kinds of things just don’t happen here. I was always left wondering where they did happen.

I never lock my car since its a soft top and Id rather them open the door than cut a window .... and its never been gone through. Hell I rarely locked my car when I lived in the DC area either.

Agreed. It's pretty damn stupid to lock a convertible.

That was always my rule with the soft top. Leave it open so they can see that there's nothing in it. But I did get some asshole that cut open the back window on my TJ just to "unlock" the unlocked door. I guess I should be grateful that they did the back passenger window which was cheaper to replace than the soft half doors it had.

I also dont keep a whole lot in there other than my recovery gear and doors off mirrors.

Obviously, that just makes sense for a soft top. I'm in safari mode year-round too and do the same thing. But assuming you had a hard top...you still wouldn't lock it? And do you not lock up your home when unoccupied? Really?

There are plenty of times I walk away without locking the house, and honestly Im pretty sure the back sliding door is unlocked right now.

Agree 100%. This is what I've been saying from the beginning as well, but the antagonists just can't help themselves. I don't know what it is about locking gas caps, fuel doors, etc., but it definitely strikes a nerve for some reason.

Its less the want to buy one and more the "OH NO THE SKY IS FALLING AND THE WORLD IS OUT TO GET EVERYONE" attitude most people have about the NEED to have one that bothers me.

Well I'm happy that you live in Mayberry, but that's not the reality for most folks. As I stated before, everyone's experiences shape their opinions and actions, and your post definitely reflects that. Obviously, not everyone is in that same situation and they therefore have to take a few more precautions. I don't understand why that is so difficult to accept.

Agree 100%. I never said that everybody needs or should have one. Clearly, that's not the case and I respect those who don't just as much as those who do. As I've said many times, to each his/her own, you do you, etc.
