5% is legal in CA?

35% is the limit on the front two windows here in NC, and no tint is allowed below the AS1 line on the windshield. They do check during inspections, though you can find shops that will pass it. However if the offending shop gets caught, it's a huge fine.

I've been meaning to get the back doors, hardtop windows, and rear glass tinted darker though since those are exempt on an SUV (Jeep) here in NC.

55% on the windshield is a game changer tho. Luckily I know people when Inspection time rolls around lol

I don't know what the fine is these days but many moons ago when I had my Driver and passenger window tinted it was $35 fine plus tint removal and inspection..... so yup much more than a fine though some shops advertise discounted rate if you get a ticket and need to have it reapplied.

I just got back into a wrangler after about a 12 year break, and in the past 2 weeks I've probably waved at 40-50 jeeps and had maybe 4 wave back. When I had my TJ literally everyone waved. Is that not a thing anymore? None of the people with a dash full of ducks has waved, I just get this weird vacant eyed stare like "Why are you waving at me?"

Shoot come to MD, they don't stop. Gladiators wave like crazy, more so than Wranglers.

When driving my Wife's Wrangler I wave at anything that looks like a Jeep (FJ Cruisers, Samurais, Old Land Cruisers, Land Rover Defenders, Renegades on 40's and one tons, 2 rectangular legos stacked together), unless they have an angry grill, or are driving a 4XE.

Well, I wave at anything that looks like it's an offroad rig unless it's a tacoma or a guy driving his wife's Wrangler

In CA no amount of tint is legal on the front windows + windshield. Most LEO don't pay attention to it though. If you get caught it's just a minor "Fix-it" ticket. Remove the film and go get it inspected for a fine. Then they just drive right back to the tint shop to get it put back on.

Local LEOs here would not be likely to stop you just for tint, but they will tack it on to other offenses. Also gives them probable cause to stop you. State Troopers however WILL stop you for tint alone, and ticket you for it. They actually chased me down once for a AS1 violation on the windshield.

In my long time driving a Miata I can honestly say I never waved or was waved at by anyone, it is not a thing Miata owners do.

Seriously? Maybe that's a regional thing then, especially around the Tail of the Dragon.

In my area, stock hard-top JK or JL owners don't wave and have probably never heard of waving. Soft-top owners wave, pre-JK owners wave, naked Wranglers wave and it's a 50/50 chance if it's a heavily modified hard-top JK/JL owner.

We have lots of bright sun and heat in Phoenix. Our back windows are always tinted from the Factory. Our front side windows, we go with the darkest legal tint. I have never considered, or seen a need to put tint on the windshield...LOL

Well the annual 'inspections' here in the non-smog counties (no OBD-II testing) is just a money grab by the state. It's something like $12 + $10 extra if you have tint. No shop can afford the time to rack a car and actually "inspect" it for $22. The shop I use just records the current mileage, and sends me on my way. You can't skip the inspection because until the DMV is notified it's done, you can't renew your plates for the upcoming year.
