Is it legal (or semi-legal to travel with three passengers in the back seat of a 2-door JL? I realize it might not be comfortable, but I need to accommodate five people (smaller ladies weighing around 100 lbs each) for a trip from Boston to Cape Cod beach, and I prefer not to use two cars this time.

Check the laws in MA but AFAIK every person in the vehicle must be wearing a seat belt or in a car seat.

I have a "friend" that says, you are limited by the amount of seatbelts in your vehicle. That being said, you are an adult and make your own choices.

In Massachusetts, no it's not even semi legal. Don't put peoples lives at risk. Take two cars or rent something larger for the trip.

If there are 3 seatbelts, you’re good to go. The unlimiteds have 3 seatbelts.

In my State, every passenger must have a seatbelt. One exception is pickup trucks. If every seatbelt location in use, extra passengers may ride in the bed of a pickup. I think it's to accommodate agriculture.

In Massachusetts, not wearing seatbelts can only be a secondary offense, not the primary reason for a stop. Generally, many back passengers, except for kids, aren't often buckled up in the Northeast. However, I always make sure my backseat family wears seatbelts, especially during long highway trips. Thanks for the clarification! It's evident that this forum had a clear consensus on this question.
