I have a 2018 JLU bought new on August 22, 2018. I thought I was going to luck out and not have corrosion issues, but I just noticed bubbling on one door. It’s very minor and I would let it go except I’m afraid it will get worse after the 5 year corrosion warranty expires. Also, I have the lifetime Mopar warranty but don’t know if that applies.

Any opinions on whether this is worth taking care of now?

Thanks!

Been a while since i've been on the forums.

Had the doors/hinges in my 2018 Rubicon Unlimited repainted in the summer of 2021 under warranty. Bubbles appeared again soon thereafter, along with along the edges of the hood and some really bad corrosion/bubbling around the windshield.

Sadly, like others have mentioned, I couldn't deal with seeing it deteriorate before my eyes and sold it. Had plans of keeping it forever and had full intentions of doing so had there not been such issues. I don't think painting/replacing fixed any of the underlying causes.

I would of sold it when they first appeared. I paid a lot of money to have something new and nice not repainted and look like a checkered board then have a diminish value.

anyone no the deal with this and a lemon law?, The first time dealer had mine for 14 weeks, 3 car payments and no loaner. Going to drop it off again, all hinges and now the bottom of the doors and edges of the hood.

is it three repairs or it a time limit there also?

This is encouraging to see. My experience is quite different. Three years old. Corrosion around every hinge on all four doors and the tailgate, the windshield frame, and the hood edge. I have about eight dealerships within 45 minutes of me. Only one would take it in to review for warranty and their wait time is eight months before it is addressed. Repeat contacts to Jeep Cares has gotten me zero. Evident from talking to the call takers that this issue is blowing up and they do not have a customer centric response And are dealing with more and more highly frustrated customers. Consider yourself very lucky. Good for you - enjoy.

Wow your lucky. My JWU is a 2016. I noticed the bubbling on all door hinges after 4 years. Always garaged over the winter. I called my jeep dealer where I bought the vehicle and they said they couldn't do anything. Now the paint has practically chipped off the hinges and exposed rust. Sad part is that the rest of the vehicle looks brand new except the rusted hinges.

All of the corrosion threads you are commenting on pertain to the 2018- JL with aluminum body panels. This is galvanic corrosion not rust.
Your JK does not have aluminum body panels so what you have is actually rust which could actually be the result of paint chipping? The hinges on Jeeps are very prone to paint chips. Could be why it wasn't covered?

I read that the JK's as well. I had bubbling on all my hinges and eventually the paint chipped off and rust formed.

Its suspect that my hinges like the JL's did the same only after a couple years.

No one has ever brought up the fact that this might be electrolysis. I come from a marine background and that's what it looks like to me. Any current flowing through the fame or body is going to seek the softest metal, in this case aluminum. Give it a softer metal and it will go to it. I think I will just drop by a marine supplier and buy a "zinc" and bolt it to my frame. Can't hurt.

So I can buy a zinc bolt, put it in my frame somewhere, and if it's electrolysis it will seek the zinc metal?

I had this issue early 2019 when I was at 55000 Kms… I had the the thing undercoated, rust inhibitor and even bought the cosmetic rust warranty.

they refused to do anything about it

Update. I took it to the closest dealer who was really nice about it, although he claimed he had not heard of any corrosion issues. I’m now in AZ so maybe it’s not an issue here.

He submitted photos and documentation, but Jeep refused the repair. They said it didn’t look like corrosion - more like a paint defect - although it appeared in the last 6 months. So my 5 year corrosion warranty is expiring without any coverage.

@JeepCares can you help???
