OK, I jumped the coil directly from the battery using some wire stuffed in the ends of the connector to the coil and some jumper cables to the battery. It works!
So, I'll double check voltage to the passthrough connector and if it is good, then it's just a matter of pin contact within connector on the coil.
Thanks much to CaJLMetalHead and Shawn for suggesting just going straight to another power source. I was about to start pulling axles (wheels, brakes, hubs, FAD, then axles) whew.
