Front Locker Coil/Solenoid Actuator Dead - Sources?

OK, I jumped the coil directly from the battery using some wire stuffed in the ends of the connector to the coil and some jumper cables to the battery. It works!

So, I'll double check voltage to the passthrough connector and if it is good, then it's just a matter of pin contact within connector on the coil.

Thanks much to CaJLMetalHead and Shawn for suggesting just going straight to another power source. I was about to start pulling axles (wheels, brakes, hubs, FAD, then axles) whew.

Nice work. The biggest issue with driving a computerized off-road machine is it’s a computerized off-road machine. If all the 1s and 0s aren’t lining up it can be a nightmare to diagnose issues.

So, the Z-Locker should be emulating the sensor, power for the locker is straight from the fuse block, the DCM fires the locker via the ground.

So, in re-checking if I had power to the axle, I jumped the coil in the same way, but this time to the chassis harness. The harness measures 14.7v . Sure enough, it functions the coil. So, it isn't getting power from the chassis harness to the coil connector. The sockets/pins may not be making contact.

Is there any code or locker light flash going on? That's how the FSM has the diagnostics.

Happy to hear that you have not only narrowed down the issue, but that the coil still works. It (like the sensor module once was) appears to be unobtanium which is lame, lame, lame.

Check the pins to make sure one or more have not pushed back into the connector.

Yeah...FCA never misses an opportunity to make things more difficult and expensive when it comes to repairs. I would opine that Dana does not sell it separately either.

So, I messed with the socket a little in the connector, but it either had an oxide/sulfide layer on the socket and pushing in those copper pigtails cleaned it or putting high current to the coil did something internally. I don't really know for sure. But I put dielectric grease on all the connectors, installed my old sensor that I potted last night and it all works. I'll keep the Z Automotive bypass jumper in the glove box.

It's all buttoned up and filled with 85-140 synthetic and working with that old sensor that was full of oil.?

The rest of this story is that the coil had an intermittent short internally. It ended up failing completely a short while later.

The coil is not available as a Jeep/Mopar part at any assembly below the axle assembly (flange to flange). Since I had discovered the Bronco used the D44 and had a locker in some trims, I was able to come up with a relatively inexpensive and simple coil replacement using a Bronco coil and the Z-Automotive sensor jumper.
