If you like driving rentals or loaners, I highly recommend the 4xe.

Mine’s great. It’s also been in the shop for over a month. It also doesn’t like cold winters (FORM, electric mode disabled). It also has gotten keyed for parking while charging.

not joking:

I’d recommend the 392 if your budget allows for it. Otherwise, the 3.6L for reliability, or 2.0L turbo for any altitude driving. I’ve heard good things about the diesel, but I’ve never driven a JL one.

Go with the manual 3.6, or get a used auto 3.6 without e-torque, and put an engine-popper supercharger on it.
Yes have considered this...how far back would I have to go to do this? The interwebs keep saying they were introduced in 2018.

notice the OP excluded the 392 from this thread because he knew it wouldn’t be a fair fight for the FUNNEST vehicle if it were included ??✌
I finally said F'it and started counting up everything I had, took money from the co-workers desk, went diving under couch cushions, dug through the cat litter....and I'm just $25,000 short

I can start selling blood and semen I guess....wonder how long it would take.

They definitely offered the 3.6 non e-torque for the first couple years of the JL - say 18 and 19. Not sure if it was phased out for the auto in 20 or 21…

Guess I am the only one that prefers a manual as a daily. I know the auto is better for off road, but as a "daily" (I don't drive daily) I prefer the manual, even in the worst traffic conditions.
No you're not, I did that for the first 30 years of my career.....Mustang GT, Chevy stepside truck, 3 Corvettes, a Porsche Turbo (yowsa), and 2 BMWs. My knees are a mess now, just had to go auto.

I have more or less made all my other choices with the exception of the engine (OK, it won't be a 392). Would like something fun to drive, and expandable in the future. I spoke with Edelbrock the other day, and they won't be trying to make a supercharger for the etorque V6 and think no one will. Both the 2.0 and diesel have options.

For mainly on-road driving, which engine has the best fun-factor?
Easily the 4XE!

I did not like the 4Xe. Granted, the salesman didn’t know squat so it was the blind leading the blind.

Still, the salesman told me to come to a full stop and then floor it. I did so and caught the Jeep off-guard. It didn’t know what to do; hesitated for a few seconds while it figured out if it should use the electric motor, the 2.0T or both. I got no power; I was disconcerted. When it finally kicked in, the poor little engine screamed like a cat in heat chased by five horny dogs.

It was terrible; the farthest thing from “fun”.

I drove the rest of the way like an 80-year old grandma.
Sounds like you needed a check ride first with someone who new the operating systems sir :)

Where do you get your cheap/free electricity for charging?
At the power company where I used to work lol. All my runs during the day are under the range limitations and it works out very nice!

Agreed. You’d think the salesman would be that person.

Man that sucks! I hope it works out for you. Mine has been 100 percent! And then for someone to key it is beyond being an idiot.

After recently putting on 37's on my lowly sport with the 3.45 gears on the RHD with the 2.0 I'd recommend this one
Very little power loss and the mpg is almost the same so...... somethings working right
Perhaps having the dealership program it afterward helped somehow - I don't know, all I know is that the little engine seems to do just fine still so....
I'd say its a fun little engine
Obviously if you can swing a 392 - well... Duh !!! - get that one :jk:

30 years of buying Wranglers I have never met a salesman that knew anything about them.

Be an educated consumer.
I probably spent 50 or so hours researching before I pulled the trigger on ordering mine and I used to have a CJ-7... miss that one but they sure drive better now.

I had two gas Jeeps before buying this diesel and I would buy a diesel again over a gas Jeep any day. I loved my other two gassers but this diesel imho is the best motor yet for a Jeep. On the road it can pull hard and off road, going over rocks and such the motor seems unware that this should be hard. I believe max torque comes in about 1400 rpm which isn't too high above idle. I think I remember that the 392 and 4Xe make about 28ft-lbs more torque which isn't a lot more.

About "fun" from the diesel, it's great stock but consider adding the Banks PedalMonster. The PM does not add anymore power but it allows you to control how fast the power gets delivered. I've never turned it all the way up yet because it gets a bit too spirited and tries to spin the tires even at the lower settings! It can definitely snap your neck back!!

If your idea of a fun engine is great power off road and not slow on road (or even scary on road with the PM), you might want to go with the diesel.

BTW; I don't hate any of the other engines that are being offered and I want to buy my wife a 4Xe because I think it would be perfect for her.
