Damage to transfer case by using 2wd?

I commented on Casey Currie’s Instagram post about his new 392 axles asking if they were available with selectable hubs. He stated that it’s “super hard on the Tcase to run it in 2wd.”

I’ve been running mine that way for 2,000 since I bought it (except while wheeling).

Anyone know more about this?

I’m wondering if they’re like the JK where the front drive shaft is always turning when you’re driving. In bad weather I’ve left hubs locked so I didn’t have to get out to go into 4WD. You’re not going to get binding having the front end connected in 2WD. Technically there will be more wear. Do you have a link to the actual aftermarket axles?

From what I’ve read the 392 tcases are the same as the AWD cases offered on other JLs with the only difference being that the 392 doesn’t have the option for 2HI from the factory but the internals are the same (IE they have a provision for 2WD use). Unsure of whether that’s 100% but haven’t heard any negative effects from those using ForceRWD yet. I do use ForceRWD some and definitely will when the 60s get swapped in. If I have any tcase issues down the road I’ll be sure to post

Yes, using the Tazer for force2wd. The front driveline does NOT turn in that mode, force 2wd will even work in 4 low. So I’m assuming the Tcase uses clutches to activate 4wd.

In that case I’d think it’s easier on the Tcase, with Haldex and Full time 4WD the clutches in a viscous coupler system are constantly allowing for slippage and putting shock on the Tcase or rear/front diff. Clutches are a wearable item, so if you have the selec trac and never use 4 auto there won’t be much wear on the clutches since being in 4 hi or low the clutch stays engaged.

Reminds me of the V8 explorers having “AWD” but no 2 hi setting.

Old timers like me remember when Porsche introduced the 911 turbo. It became nicknamed Dr. Death, when the turbo spooled up the drivers would lose control. Back then everyone wasn’t a millionaire so mostly doctors had the money to buy that expensive of a car. Those cars were crashed by a lot of Doctors…. next version of the 911 turbo was AWD.

They're 4wd, not AWD. No different than the 4hi auto for those with that option(myself included). It isn't real AWD at all though.

In saying that, who gives a shit? I bet it's a blast smashing that accelerator. Lol.

Ya, AWD involves torque vectoring and independent power to each wheel. The jeep most definitely doesn't do that. To be honest, even though I have 4wd auto as well. My first winter I found in was only using it on highways and the remainder of the time, I would flick into the 4wd part time. I just prefer to know exactly when all 4 wheels are getting power I guess.

With the Tazer it can be switched back and forth pretty easy (per the video below) but I would mainly want RWD for off-roading fun and doing the occasional sliding around and doughnuts off pavement.....

Would that scenario be worse than leaving it in RWD and driving around town?

The only thing I can think of is if he didn’t realize I was using a taser to go to 2wd drive. If the Jeep was trying to use all wheel drive and the front hubs weren’t locked, then I could see issues.
