Newbie question.

So I’m newly back into Jeeping. It’s been 20yrs since I owned a legit 4x4, which was a CJ7. I didn’t know much back then, didn’t know to air down etc, I just put it in 4L, pointed her where I wanted to go, and more often than not, I could make it.

Fast forward 2 decades and I’m 40, have teens at home, am financially secure and have free-time again, and decided it was time to get another Jeep.

so I have a JLUR-XR. I’m thrilled with it.

I registered myself for the Moab jeep Safari this year. I’m on 2 trail runs, nothing crazy since it’s been a while. I’ll be running FinsNThings, and Porcupine Rim.

it’s time to outfit the Jeep with necessary gear. For this first ride I’m thinking: Compressor, First Aid, recovery rope/strap, shackles are probably the main things I should buy right away. Eventually I’ll buy a bumper upgrade and winch, but for now I’m thinking those first 3.

Does anyone else have anything they recommend I absolutely get for that first trip? Neither trail is too far from town, neither should take more than a few hours, and there will be tons of other jeeps, so I don’t think I need to go crazy buying gear before April.

Anyone with more experience than me that can point any key piece of gear I might be missing?

Ah yes, I do have some autodeflators that I ordered a while back.

My absolute best off-road upgrade modification was a lift and larger rubber (35's). Stock JL's are really capable machines, but the bigger tires and added clearance there's now literally nowhere I can't pilot it.

Living in Colorado that's really saying something.

Moab is but child's play.

I'd recommend:

1. A good pair or two of gloves
2. A tire repair kit
3. Ratchet straps
4. A tool kit - common tools in the sizes needed for your JL. I use a tool roll to minimize cabin noise.
5. A fire extinguisher. I use a roll bar mounted unit.
6. If you are going with a group it's nice to have a pair of radios. Most groups have gone to GMRS radios.

I do have 35’s, we’ll 315’s to be more accurate. So we’re good there.

Here are additional recommendations:
1. For going off pavement- front mud flaps. Without them you will be throwing rocks up against your read rood hinges and rear fenders. I don't recall if the XR is higher than a Rubicon, if it has the same suspension height and you like Moab you'll probably eventually want another inch or more of lift.
2. jumper cables and/or a good battery jump starter
3. an off road mapping app for your phone or tablet such as GAIA or OnX
4. I also carry a small shovel.

I'm not sure about the Jeep Safari requirements but the Jeep Jamborees require all to have a GMRS radio....other than that looks like you got it covered!

OnX Offroad works with apple Carplay and Android Auto now.

A Highlift Jack is a good thing to have…

I know the highlift is a very popular piece of gear, and it definitely completes "the look", but for my money, I far prefer a bottle jack. Less expensive, safer, more practical in terms of placement.
