I did not feel that Gorilla Glass did much better with the small pitting. I was initially super excited about Gorilla Glass and it did take a few good smacks before finally giving in. However, the extra cost for something that will still break with a big enough rock was just not worth it.
It comes with a free replacement. That's probably pointless for people that have insurance that covers it though.

Took delivery in November 2023: I still have the original windshield with zero cracks, chips, or scratches. Y'all need to stop tailgating and you may not be replacing windshields so often, lol. Remember, for every 10 mph you are traveling, you should have at least one full car-length between you and the vehicle in front of you.
Yep, I knew that there would be people chiming in with victim blaming.

My most recent damage came from driving 75 (the speed limit) in the middle lane. The rock came from a truck ahead of me in the right lane.

2020 (built 11/21), bought in May of that year, 20k miles and still on the original pre covid windshield.

All of you must realize by now that the Gorilla glass layer on the windshields is on the inside. The outside layer is still conventional glass.
No, I didn't realize that it was on the inside.

Corning has an interesting video showing them shooting a 1.5" ball of ice at 65MPH at a JK's windshield:

We go through a lot of rock chip weather around here and I know for a fact that the gorilla glass doesn't stop the chips and breaks, it just makes them smaller. So that isn't worth it to me

Lol, victims? That language seems a little exaggerated, don't you think, considering that we're talking about windshields here? All I'm saying is that statically speaking, most drivers (me too) follow the vehicle in front of them way too close and that probably causes the vast majority of chipped and broken windshields. Can situations like yours happen? Sure they can, but you'll never convince me that those stray situations make up the majority. Most of the windshields I've had to replace have been because I was following too close, usually behind a flatbed truck/trailer, dump truck, or a Florida Georgia Line pickup with huge M/Ts that have a -100 offset, ? ?.

There are a ton of stipulations around the Gorilla Glass warranty. Even though mine was only 6 months old, they did not cover my crack because it split quickly past their 2" or whatever it is maximum.

Jeep YJ 1990-1996. — never broke
Jeep TJ 1999- 2007 —- broke once because I was following a dually pickup truck up close on the highway to read the model on the tailgate.
Jeep JKU 2013-2018– never broke
Jeep JLU 2018-present never broke.

stop tailgating !
I'm in the same boat, sans the TJ & JK in the middle. What are all these windshield breakers doing?

Interestingly enough though, I did have a rock hit my windshield but no break. There was nobody anywhere near me. So either my own KO2s flung it into my windshield or it was a meteor.

I'm going with meteor. Better story. ;)

Exactly, I undestand the bad luck of some, but also the one of most…. Stop tailgating. Funny how the community that complains the most about windshield breaks are also the worst one when it comes to tire poke.

Drove TJs for 4 years without a crack.
9 years in a JK and had the first crack last year. I also had a rock put a good sized dent in the windshield frame.
Got our first JL in ‘21 and had a crack within 2 months. A second a few months later. A third a year later.

So 15 years of daily driving Jeeps with 4 broken windshields, all of which happened in the last few years. And all these were the coming off a semi tire in another lane or traveling the opposite direction variety for the folks that think it’s only tailgaters that get cracks.

I think it’s a combination of more traffic on the roads, more debris on the roads, and weaker windshields.

That's pretty good marketing. I don't think a giant smooth ice ball has the same affect as a sharp, jagged rock, but the video sure looks cool.
