To me the JLU has always seemed huge - it's a few inches longer than my FJ Cruiser, which feels like a boat on trails compared to a two door Wrangler - and so, aside from the extra cargo room or rear doors, why a JLU?

The soft top becomes unwieldy, the hard top nearly impossible to remove and the length increases the turning radius quite a bit, all things which kind of mitigate many of the things I tend to think of as "Jeepyness."

This isn't a criticism of JLU owners per se, but rather besides needing the space, I don't get why it's so popular other than as a substitute for some other kid hauler or when you need to take a family regularly and don't want to deal with flipping up the seats to get kids in the back.

I'm seriously curious to know and don't mean to be snarky in any way, nor do I mean to come across in any sort of "Real Jeeps have Two Doors" kind of way.

Because they can be built to be badass rock crawlers. You don't see rock crawling buggies with a Jeep 2 door wheelbase. They look more proportional with bigger tires and they don't flip backwards at Moab either.

They aren't that big if you sat in a jku and jlu you can barely tell I suppose if you are in th ePNW or the backwoods of west virginia you might notice it. From my personal ecperince sitting in one and owning a JKU for 10 years not much difference not noticable. Also they say the new jl and jlu have tighter turning radius than their counterpart jk jku and beside they don't break theose little frotn axels on the FJ which i hear is a common issue. Just in case you have never hear of it look Ursa minor Vehicle. who hauls kids any mor not me mine are grown but my dogs sure like the extra room and dare I say carrying work gear.

Because I want to turn the back area into a mini-camper and I need the room to sleep in.

I also want the increased towing capability, as low as that already is.

And it's not just off-roading, but overlanding that I want to get into.

Also helpful to have more cargo space if you're ever moving apartments.

After crawling in and out of the back seat of my parents car way too many times as a kid I have a 1 door per seat rule. Cargo room is a big reason too.

When I first saw a JKU I thought it looked really long but now I think a 2 door jeep looks short.

I want a 2 door, but I also want to tow a travel trailer. I may keep my LJR for towing and buy a JL, but I suspect I'll just bite the bullet and get a JLU.

I don't want anyone in the back seat so JL for me. I had 2 JKUs and thought I needed the room.

I was in the 82nd and I have brain damage from a stroke I had while in Afghanistan. I could not buy a jeep till this JL model because of the android auto, back up cam, brake and lane assist. I was thinking two door for my JL because of the tighter turning radius and maneuverability. I have a real Service Dog and have to haul my 3 wheel Catrike so I was starting to lean to the JLU. what do you guys think?

I am sure you will use a hitch carrier for the Catrike. No need for the 4-door if it is just you and the dog.

It's more practical and suits my lifestyle better than a two-door JL. I say live and let live.
