Why is this light on? I haven’t put it in 4HI or Low. I did hit a pothole on the highway. This comes and goes. Am I damaging anything by driving?

I'm not an offroader. Would the sensor go bad if I NEVER used it? Not even once? I mean I know anything can happen, but still...

Yes it will. My grand Cherokee was down for 8 weeks (during Covid, no parts available) while waiting for a rear locker sensor. To that point I had never been off road or even put it in 4wd

If it is oil in the locker position sensor it is the result of normal gear oil movement in the diff whether or not the lockers are ever engaged. The plastic pieces are bonded together In a way that allows oil and metal particles inside and causes an electrical fault.

IF that is your case, potting the sensor encapsulates the components inside to keep the oil and metal particles away from the circuit. This is my basic locker position sensor interpretation of the better info given by @chevymitchell

Obviously there can be other causes for the issue you’re having.

Is there any harm driving it like this? I can get past a blinking light. It'll be annoying, but I'm sure there's no warranty on this

I wouldn’t think so. I drove mine around for about a month before finally taking it in. If you’re gonna own a Jeep you better make sure there’s other transportation available lol

There have been a couple of instances where people have had the rear axle actually lock up on them during this sensor failure. Unplugging the wiring going to the axle is cheap insurance while waiting to get it repaired.

100% should be covered under powertrain warranty. Luckily, they can now just replace the sensor. When they first started failing, the sensor wasn't available by itself, and they would replace the entire axle.
Or you can DIY - the sensor comes in a pack of 5, and you get to experiment until you find the right one.
Mine has come on a handful of times, but the locker has never engaged (pretty sure sensor and engagement are two separate circuits). It hasn't come on in about 3 weeks, so I'm not gonna' worry about it until I have to.

Weird. We have two JLUs, five and four years old. We’ve never had a sensor failure, and the four-year-old Rubicon we’ve wheeled a lot, and I drove it cross-country and back. The diff fluid has been changed twice in that Jeep.

I have been figuratively holding my breath for a long time, over this issue.
