Why get a 4XE?

No haters please. What are the upsides? The two downsides for me are that the rear seats don't fold as flat as I would like for my dog crate and it will only go 25 miles or less on a charge.

I don’t have one but see the appeal. Short daily trips to and from the train station for work, where I could run on electric only. Plus, short trips dropping kids off at different places in town. I would hardly ever have to put gas in the thing.

Also, the power and instant torque the 4xe produces is very appealing. The tax credit is worth mentioning too.

alot of people miss this. This is top 2 then the hybrid aspect of it. It's nice to have the power with "great" mpg as a bonus. I work within 10 miles at both my jobs so it was a no brainer for me.

I think if they work for you depends on what type of driving you do. For lots of people 25 miles covers most of their daily commute and running around. If you get a level 2 charger you can often go much more than 25 miles in a single day. For a Wrangler they are really comfortable on the road and they do have a ton of power. They would not be my first choice for a dedicated rock crawler or anything like that .

When I bought mine, after tax credit, it ended being about 3k less than a gas Wrangler but think that has gotten less this last year. How much you drive and the cost of electricity all factor in.

The added torque is as tempting as not having to put gas in it during the week but the additional weight and no 2 door was enough to dissuade me. If I was to get a 4 door I would definitely consider the 4Xe.

I didn't get one because I bought my JLR for off road; however, if I bought it for a daily driver (which I do daily drive it, that's just not the purpose of buying it), my work is within a few miles, so is shopping and most of my daily chores. So, for me, I could use it almost every day without "liquid" fuel, but the point of getting it is to wheel it, and for that I need more than 25 mile range. I opted for the easy and very reliable 3.6L.

It may work for some, but my daily commute is 30 miles each way. And my house is 10 miles from civilization, so any errands would still be using gasoline, albiet maybe not much. If I could get 80-100 miles on a chargeI may consider it. But 25 miles on a charge doesn't do it for me. And added horsepower and torque does affect me at all. I believe the 2nd generation PHED will be more viable for many of us. This was their first stab at it.

Here are my reasons, in no particular order:

• Tax credit. - I leased mine and got to apply the tax credit as cap reduction. I'm paying less than $300/mo which is way less than what my monthly would've been for finance. I'm probably going to end up purchasing at the end, so this may not end up being too much of a benefit.
• Torque - Compared to the standard 6-cyl, all of my friends who own Wranglers agree that there's a noticeable increase in torque.
• MPG - I do most of my driving locally during the week with longer drives on weekends. With a Level 2 charger, I rarely use gas on weekdays. My overall MPG in the past year is over 40 MPG.
• Electric Motor - I didn't realize how much I'd enjoy driving in electric mode, especially on trails. It's not ton of power, but it's responsive and enough to get me where I need to most of the time. I like it so much, I'd seriously consider getting the all-electric Wrangler whenever Jeep releases it.
• Parking - The least expected benefit has to be parking. Some of the best parking in CA are reserved for handicapped and EVs. I've been able to park right in front of stores, malls, Disneyland, often with free charging!
• Cool factor - My wife and I pulled into valet parking at a fancy restaurant. At the end of the night, the valet brought out my 4xe and told me it was the favorite car he drove that night. And this was a restaurant with Ferraris and Bentleys parked up front.

But I'm sure you'll find your own reasons once you've owned it for a while.

25-28 mpg for the first 50 until the battery is shot, then 21 after that.
Or- 22 miles or so with no fuel and the next 178 or so at 21-22 mpg.
Higher speed does a number especially on flat ground - I averaged 17.5 on a longish trip but was doing 80 the whole way.

I live on the outskirts of a large metro area and often attend a variety of events or go downtown. One advantage that I rarely see mentioned is that you can save your electric and use it while sitting in back ups on the freeways or in parking garages or to get in and out of events. That saves gas to use when it is most efficient such as when the freeways are moving freely. This maximizes the efficiency of both gas and electric for my use.
My work commute is 21 miles each way and I can plug-in at work for free and charge nightly at home for less than half what it would cost me to use gas. I usually see between 20 to 22 mpg on gas alone but average 40-50 computer calculated combined mpg a tank. I would say I fall into what would be considered an ideal use case for it. I love mine and would highly recommend it to anyone that it fits their driving habits

I drove the 4xe and was extremely happy with it, unfortunately it didn’t fit my needs due to longer commute to work and home, and unfortunately here in southern NJ we don’t have many charging station, I don’t have anything at my job or near by that would of helped me recharge while at work, so personally I would say it’s how it best fits your needs, there are plenty of upside with this jeep, the drive is amazing and tax credit etc etc will help you save $$$ on the long run, but ultimately it needs to work for you!

I recently took a couple thousand mile road trip. I did not ever charge up after I left the house. I started keeping track of my mileage a couple hundred miles in. I ended up with 18.5 MPG checking the pump on gas only. I think my mileage computer said 19 mpg which should of been 20 mpg because I am running 315 tires and lifted. Most of this was at 65 mph. I have no doubt I would of did a couple mpg better if I had stock tires and even better than that if I had a Sahara on stock tires.
Now there is no doubt that the small gas tank sucks. Going across Nevada you do not want to skip any major gas stations. I do think people get far too hung up on the only goes 22-25 miles on electricity. Really it goes as far as the gas tank allows. You still have the extra power even when the battery says 0. Saying that I rarely get into the gas because it does suck the mileage down fast. The 4xe is still a pretty capable off-roader but the jury is still how on how reliable they are going to be.
