I wanted to mount my rear dashcam (from a Wolfbox mirror dashcam) outside the vehicle. There are several advantages to this over mounting inside the rear window, the biggest of which is a wider, clearer view. I mounted mine on top of the middle taillight over the spare. It gives me everything I wanted, short of one major issue - camera shake. The mount for the taillight is plastic and tall, so has a slight shake at speed. It is usable but slightly annoying to have the image in the rear view mirror jitter.

I've heard of people mounting on top of the existing rear cam in the middle of the spare, but I would have to remove the camera to pull the spare.

Considering moving it to the bumper, but wondering if the jitter will exist there, as well.

Would like to hear from others who have found a solution. Thanks!

Curious what the advantages may be by mounting it outside.

I mounted my A229 pro rear camera inside the back window up top on the passenger side. It does not obstruct my view and the picture itself is perfect.

Do you have any pictures of how you mounted your camera? I'm considering mounting mine like joatmon, but like the simplicity of inside.

I was thinking about the back of the roll bar somewhere, but concerned the image quality would be terrible during "softop" season through the plastic rear window. This is why I'm still leaning towards above the spare tire. This location works all seasons (hardtop, topless and softop).

Mounted mine the same way, drilled a hole (carefully) because I simply don't trust the double-tape with the heat.

Now I need a great mounting place for the front one!

Mine is mounted within the wheel. Shaking is only an issue when going 80+ MPH on crappy interstates like I-25 just south of Denver.

I was thinking that I'd mount the next one behind the window to take advantage of the wiper, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have enough visibility.

Here's a shot that gives you an idea of what it looks like. Note that I was doing stupid shit to try to be the first to make it through a snowed-in pass. It's not obvious from that shot, but the straps were there in a feeble attempt to keep the Jeep from rolling into the valley while we winched it out.

I do not have any pictures but mine is mounted the same as "azjl#3" posted in #5. I do need to clarify that I have a hardtop that is left on year round. So I understand your concern if you remove your top or use a soft top.

A bit of a rhetorical question, how's everyone bringing the outdoor rear camera's cable back inside the cab?

My rear dash camera's bungeed to the sports bar, so I don't face this wiring question, but I have solar panels rooftop whose cables I originally brought inside through the hard top's rear window hinges, but later modified to enter the cabled from the undercarriage so as to work with either the soft or hard top.

My wiring goes through the flap in the tailgate.

Good camera location! Yes, I've seen posts on mounting inside the wheel. However, I'm concerned I'd damage the camera during a 5 tire rotation pulling off/putting back the spare.

Appreciate the offer. Once I settle on the camera location, I'll reach out if I can use it.

FYI for STLs, I normally share my designs on Thingiverse.
