Can I power a ham radio through the aux switches extra wire connections. I heard hams need to be direct wired to Battery?

I've been thinking about putting my Cobra 75 here. It's accessible when I need it, but out of the way for when I don't (which will be 99% of the time). Just on the fence about drilling small holes into the plastic at this point since my double-sided tape ain't gonna cut it here.

Just a thought, but how about a really thin piece of custom cut/bent sheet metal (to also hold the mic) that can slide in the trim/dash panel joints? There are a few joints there you could get to and slide it in, even loosening the dash/trim panels first to allow the metal to slide in. No permanent holes. Fab the other end to hold the mic.

I saw a drillless mount in the right side of the dash just under the vent and it looked nice. I just purchased a lido seat bolt mount for my Yaesu HT and thinking about getting the cobra 75 as well. Here's a link. http://www.lidomounts.com/homepage/lm300ext.html

I just know I'll be upgrading to a Yaesu mobile unit very soon.

That ain't a bad idea, but I'm not too worried about mounting a mic clip down in that area seeing as it really won't be visible. I just want to be absolutely sure that that is the ideal spot and that I'm not banging into it with my knee or the mic is gonna come flying off on bouncy trails and what not.

Of course, right now I'm waiting for a suitable antenna mount for the JL before I get started and I'm also debating whether to keep my Cobra 75 or switch to the Uniden CMX760. I like the larger display, more accessible mic and volume buttons, and the unit itself being significantly smaller.

I took it. The clip was taped to the dash and held long enough for me to snap it.
Oh ok Gotcha! Is there a thread where you talk about your install? That looks Great where you have the Mic! There is some really strong 3m tape that will hold the mic clip, not sure what it would do to the plastic though if you wanted to remove it. Where did you mount your Antenna?

Oh, nothing is installed yet. I'm still waiting for a suitable antenna mount for the JL. That's literally just a pic of the Cobra on the taped mic clip with the cord tucked under the dash, plugged into nothing.

How's your reception with that set up, pretty easy install.

:cwl:;)

Wondering if anyone uses the MURS radios? I've always used CB for my Jeep clubs and when off-roading with Jeeps. However, when I bought my Ford Raptor in 2014, all the Raptor folks used MURS business frequency radios. I quickly learned there are 5 license-free 2-watt business frequencies that allow for much greater distances and clearer communication. I had to buy a $200 Motorola RMM2050 just to run with the Raptor folks a few times a year. Since we tended to go very fast offroad, there were often 2 or 3 miles of distance between the lead Raptor and the sweeper on long trails. The MURS radios performed much better than CBs. I'll probably get a CB again for my Jeep just because I think it's more commonly used amongst Jeepers, but just curious whether then MURS trend had caught on to the Jeep community.

I've got a Unide CMX760, so I'll put the base either under the passenger seat or under the passenger side dash. The mic, which has the controls, will mount next to the grab bar to the right of the center stack.

I've been considering this unit as a replacement to my Cobra 75. How are you liking it?

I haven't installed it and used it yet. I'm still waiting on a viable antenna mount for the JL. I can't wait to give it a go, though. It is super compact and the backlighting color can be changed to go with the JL's dash theme. I'll certainly let everyone know once I get it all set up. I just don't know the timeline right now.

Yeah, those are my reasons for considering it, too.

I’ve got the Uniden installed. They only put out 3 Watts from the factory but can be dialed up to 3.5-4.0. It works, but I don’t have anything to compare it to. At one point my antenna lost the ground connection in the fire ring coax. It is mounted in the existing hole in the Mopar spare tire add on bracket. There is a thread showing this. I think the reception was better for reasons I’ll never take the time to understand. I did make sure the tailgate was well grounded though.

Do you know how to dial it up or do you know a tuner who does that?
