I've always believed it best to get the initial break-in oil out of an engine in the first 1,000 miles. This Jeep will see relatively rough duty in the Nevada desert and occasional trailer towing. My usual OCI will be 5,000 miles. Every so often I'll send a sample in for a UOA to see how it's doing.

I've noticed the owner's manual say 0w-20 is "recommended", not required. I think these engines were spec'd for 5w-30 in the past. I believe the super thin oils are a result of trying to meet EPA gas mileage requirements. It would be interesting to see what the oil recommendations are outside of the US.

ETA: forgot to mention I doubt I would use the free oil changes at the dealer. In fact the salesman neglected to mention this to me.

Hello Cliff. I was wondering about the SAE 0W-20. So just a recommendation. I am thinking that in the hotter climates that we are in, Nevada for you and Texas for me, maybe a little more viscosity, like the 5W-30, would be a little better protection VS what is needed somewhere up North.

I'm with you on that. What I think I'll do is try a run of 5w-30 next oil change and also do a UOA. If there is no downside I'll keep using it.

My 08 JKU specified 5w-20 for it's 3.8L. I almost always used 5w-30 and it did great. I had UOAs since it was new and it was in great shape when I had the LS conversion done.

I use Pennzoil 0w20 full synthetic and original mopar filter. That’s what dealer uses. I keep the receipts just in case for any warranty contingencies. Also, I write the milage on receipts and the date. I like doing it myself, even though last time I took it to dealer cause I was not feeling well. But I will keep doing it myself because I like it.
Might want to copy those receipts as I have had them fade out over time.

Was thinking of asking the dealership if I could just get (4) of the filters with the Jeep Wave program so I could do it myself.

I had mine done by the dealer at 1500 miles.
On my way home on a rainy Oregon day I noticed an odor of burning oil and put it down to most likely some spill on the engine from removing the old filter. When I got out at home I saw a massive oil slick all the way up the street behind me; opened the hood to find oil all over the engine and the cap over the filter very loose...they hadn’t tightened it down and oil had all blown out. Called and raised hell with the dealer. They sent their head service guy out to my house, put oil back in, drove it back to dealership, again replaced oil & filter, steam cleaned everything and delivered it back to my door. I mean they made it right, but I think I’ll forfeit my remaining free oil changes and take it to my regular guy from here out.

I got my first oil change at 8,000 miles (and before the Jeep “told me” I needed one). Apparently I was also the first one to tell the dealership they used too much oil too (I.e., 6qts instead of 5qts per manual)

4728, because we were going on a road trip that weekend and the 500+ round trip would have put me overdue. Oil was @ 28% per the diagnostics. Used 5 qts of 0-W20 (i think, whatever was in the owner's manual).

4948 miles also told the dealership to only put in 5qts. No argument, but they did say that I'd be charged for 6qts. On pick, they confirmed that I was correct that 5qts is all that should go into the JL.

Paperwork says 5qts, but haven't checked the dipstick.

Hopefully you didn’t have to pay?! You get 4 free oil changes with the Jeep wave program.

Why the hell are people putting in 5w30 when the manual specifically states 0w20? Am I missing something here?
0W-20 is what FCA is recommending for maximum fuel efficiency. However, if you will dig deep in the politics behind this and look at the original recommendations on the 3.6 V6, you will see that 5W-30 SAE was the recommendation for this engine to give you MAXIMUM PROTECTION. FCA is more concerned with their profits in recommending an oil that will produce a slight advantage with fuel outcomes (has to do with government CAFE regulations) but is not really concerned with the possibility that this engine will wear quicker and be evident of that PAST the warranty when using 0w-20 SAE oil. Pull up some research articles from "Bob is the Oil Guy" and do your own research. Just like the pharmaceutical industry, the bottom line is how they can make or save money.
