Hey all,
Looking for feedback from anyone who has changed their set up and any cons to they had that is similar to mine. I am trying to decide if I want to move up in wheel size to 20 inch from 18 inch, on my 2020 jlu Sahara high altitude. Currently have 35 in cooper tires on the stock Jeep wheels. I plan to keep tire size the same. I have a 2.5 inch suspension lift. Thanks

When wheel diameter increases and tire diameter remains the same, the ride becomes more harsh over bumps because there is less sidewall to absorb impacts.

Also, a shorter sidewall will lessen the amount of added traction when aired down.

Tires for 20" wheels typically only come in load range E, which will further increase the harshness.

The main benefit to larger wheels and shorter sidewalls is when it comes to maneuvering performance. This is due to there being less flex in the tires when taking fast curves and corners and whatnot. That is sorta counterproductive when paired with a suspension lift that has raised the center of gravity.

If this is strictly for a look that will make you happy, no judgements here, go for it. At the end of the day, it's your Jeep. Use the above info to simply go into it without any surprises.

Welcome to the community!

I’m not new to the community. This is my 5th wrangler, and 25 years. Clearly I am being “schooled,” which I don’t need to be. So I guess I’m in the wrong forum again. With people who dont want to help but offer condescending comments. I understand the wheel size and tire size. However, with the JLs some came stock with 20s and 35s, on some so I was looking for actual people who kept same set up and actual experience with that in “ real” life. Not theory or opinion. I don’t care about looks, I care about ride. If I cared about looks I wouldn’t be driving a Jeep, I’d drive a much “ nicer” vehicle for 60k. Thanks for your support. I’ll unsubscribe now.

Wow… maybe I have had more coffee this morning but I didn’t read that post as any condescending comments. I pretty much agree with what was said.

I believe because your post count is low, he was welcoming you to the forum community, but maybe I’m wrong.

If you care about ride quality and not looks, then I’m confused as to why you would want to make the change. The facts are what was already posted. How you feel about those facts are opinion.

Yikes.

Nothing about his response was condescending. He provided a great summary of the competing concerns and welcomed you to the forum. Obviously, since you just got here, he’d have no way of knowing what your level of Jeep experience is and, frankly, your question strongly suggests no experience at all. It’s hard to imagine being around Jeeps for 25 years, or even 5 years, without having a general sense of the most basic tradeoffs associated with wheel and tire options. As a 40+ year Jeep and truck owner, I have experience with many combinations of larger and smaller diameter tires on larger and smaller diameter wheels, and the fundamentals of the compromises are the same regardless of the vehicle being discussed.

When you’re brand new to a forum, don’t bother to use the search engine (which every similar forum has), and raise a basic topic that has been beaten to death on every Jeep forum, you should expect a remedial lesson in response. What you won’t always get is an explanation that’s so well put and so completely kind, accurate, and welcoming.

No JLs come stock with 35's on 20's. Put whatever wheels you want on your jeep. Enjoy.

I'm often occupied, by many things, often at the same time
... I understand the wheel size and tire size.
... I don’t care about looks, I care about ride...
Uh, I don't think that word means what you think it means.

If you cared about ride, you wouldn't have considered 20" wheels, you'd be looking for 17". You can't say you understand and then contradict yourself. If you understand, you understand, then make your choice. You're asking for mutually exclusive things, and then sh*tting on the person trying to help.

Best to apologize and chive on, or whatever they say.

Ma’am, you owe Mike a big apology. He took time out of his day and answered your question respectfully and thoroughly. Also, he welcomed you to the community OF THIS FORUM.

Clearly you’ve been mistreated by someone before, causing you to make terribly incorrect assumptions here. That is unfortunate. With that said, you need to push those past negative events aside, and not use them as a filter for every human interaction you have. Filtering through a horribly negative filter will make EVERYTHING appear to be negative!

Peace and Love.

In the OP's defense, she is from New York... they can't help it most of the time. (No offense to any of y'all stuck up there)
The funny thing is, Mike's from NY, too. I was kinda hoping for a Real Housewives style match between them if the OP didn't bail.

However, I would add "Upstate NY" is a completely different world from the city. Most of the people from there are opposite of what you would expect a traditional New Yorker would be. They are country folk.

So, I would agree with another comment already shared. There's some unhealed trauma.
