reading the fine print:
from: AFE charge pipes

"Emissions Disclaimer:
This product is not currently CARB exempt and is not available for purchase in California or for use on any vehicle registered with the California Department of Motor Vehicles."
That just means that they have not paid California the exorbitant amount of money to test it yet. Per CARB, any part that effect the intake, exhaust, or fuel delivery need to be tested to verify they do not increase emissions past CARB limits. The test and registration process can be expensive. It may have not been worth it to AFE go through the CARB process even though their charge pipes have no effect on emissions.

Would CARB or the checker even know the AFE pipes are not stock when you go in for the smog check?

Even if the checkers know they are not stock, there are hundreds of thousands of aftermarket parts that are CARB compliant. The checker would have to sort through a tens of thousands of PDF files like the one below to search for a part number that is not on there.

If one wants to be sneaky about it, the person wanting the AFE charge pipes on their Ecodiesel could search through all the AFE pipes that are approved by CARB and just give the checker that part number. Most PDF's just say what the product part number is and does not give make, model or year info. I seriously doubt a checker would go onto AFE's website to confirm unless you did something to piss them off.

Honestly I don't know.
I've actually never been smogged in my life, im just assuming cars get smogged.
I have the AFE pipes ( blade runner) and it passed smog fine, with the afe air intake , they had me remove it and install the oem, and it passed

Interesting @ALeeL . I am glad we do not have to do that on the Texas side of things. I figured it would be more of a drop down type list: Aftermarket Company, Make, Model, Submodel, Engine then it would list the parts. That pdf file and searching for components would definitely make it easier to mess with the system.

yes, we know how CARB works.
point is they admit that their parts are not approved, and without the EO number, you can be refused Smog Cert.

CARB knows.
it’s the Tech doing the testing you have to get past.

if they notice something aftermarket and can’t find a sticker with an EO number on it, you’re done. no test, no Cert, no Registration.
they’re looking for stuff like this; they’re risking losing their License if the pass something non-compliant.

Here is the database if you want to see how complicated it is to look it up.

https://ww2.arb.ca.gov/applications/aftermarket-parts-database

It would take hours if someone had a bunch of mods. They would likely just tell you to remove everything even if they were Carb compliant just so they did not have to spend the time looking it up.

Yes, I am glad we do not have to deal with that bullsh!t.

Holy shit that is a ton of manufacturers! Thanks for posting the link to take a look at it. I could see why a tester could say "F it" and not want to look up a bunch of different parts.

I always wonder about these parts, but it's more of a compounding effect. The more you add, the more you get out of all of it. But at the same time, I don't think AFE advertises these as any sort of power gain.

so much ado about nothing.

no tech needs to look up anything; if they find a single aftermarket part that doesn't have an EO number on it, that's it.
