I'm trying to get a toolbag together for my JL, and so I'm trying to get the right collection of tools, specifically for my Jeep together.

Here's what I'm thinking so far:
  • Ball Peen Hammer
  • A couple of different-sized crescent wrenches
  • A couple of different-sized needle-nose pliers
  • A couple of different-sized regular pliers
  • A couple of different-sized vise grips
  • A set of metric wrenches
  • A set of metric 3/8" sockets
  • A set of metric 1/2" sockets
  • A set of 3/8" Torx sockets
  • Zip ties
  • A couple of punches
  • Wire Crimpers
  • Crimp connectors
  • Electrical Tape
  • Various flathead and phillips head screwdrivers
What else would you recommend?

I also carry a BFH, baling wire, Allen wrenches, a piece of pipe and a combination screwdriver. I still need to get an axle nut socket and the skills to replace a u-joint on the trail would be ideal.

I keep SAE tools along with metric. It's useful if you need to help others with older vehicles.

I run up to 24mm on wrenches and sockets to deal with suspension hardware. Especially since I upgraded the bolts in my suspension. A 36mm socket for the spindle nut can be useful. I carry 34, 35, and 36 to cover many vehicles.

I have a weekend kit and I add to it for week long trips. For the bigger kit I carry spares. Mostly take-off parts that I keep around but I have spare u-joints and things like that. I keep an electrical repair kit with extra fuses, wire, crimp connectors, etc. I'll also carry a battery operated impact wrench. Even a torque wrench or two.

Other than that, your list looks good for basic trail fixes.

In addition to some of what has already been mentioned I carry an all purpose modification tool, otherwise known as a hammer

LOL. But seriously. I have a shipload of tools in my bag and still think I need more. I'm adding a scan tool and just got the Metalcloak crows foot wrenches for the control arm nuts.

I need to assess whether I have the tools in the bag to change an axle, fix a u-joint, etc., etc., etc..

I would recommend an impact wrench, battery powered, and also a pipe wrench and a small plastic or rubber hammer, along with a pry bar. Gorilla tape is also good to have on-hand. Then again, I tend to over-pack ?

The guys on YouTube channel "Fab Rats" call that a "persuasion tool". And don't forget your eye-crometers. ;)

Red Dog Tools sells vehicle specific tool kits. At $499 they are insanley priced but give you an idea of the mimimum set of tools to carry.
From our experience, steering, suspension, driveline, and brake repairs make up most off-roading and overlanding mechanical issues. Our primary goal is to provide just the right tools so you can make the necessary repairs on the trail that get you back on the road.

Looks like the "perfect tool kit" for the mall crawler with a AAA Auto Club Gold membership.

A proper tool kit for a modern vehicle isn't on the mark without plenty of electrical/electronic diagnostic tools and a lithium jump pack. Then toss in all the hard tools for suspension and steering and driveline.
