how often had it been respooled?

things like this don't take well to not moving. regular respooling every month or so is recommended maintenance for multiple reasons.
Honestly about once a year which is way more love than the 20 year old winch we had on our old bronco got before we wrecked it. The winch on the bronco worked like a champ. Just ugly lol. We had a winch from the 80s that looked like a warn 8274 but i think it was either a mile marker or Ramsey and it never skipped a beat. I’m gonna see if I can find the photo of that old bronco because now I’m super curious of what model that winch was.

I believe at one time Warn winches were 100% made in the USA. They're not anymore. Nevertheless, how much would you pay for a winch made 100% in the USA?

I would pay 3 times the cost ($1200) I paid for my Badland winch ($400). Maybe even $1500 if the reputation & warranty was remarkable.

Edit: I think that's reasonable.

There's still one Warn that is 100% American.

No globally sourced parts? According to Warn tech support at the time of my purchase all Zeon winches were assembled in Oregon but included globally sourced parts. Just curious about the 8274.

One thing to watch out for especially with cheaper winches is their duty cycles.. some are just about worthless ie 5% like XBull's. Some won't list it so you buy it then see in in the owners Manuel fine print.

It doesn't share the electronics that the others do, my understanding from my last conversation with a rep was that this one is still using US sourced parts. But that could have changed since then. Be a shame.

That is good to know…out of my price range but very cool.

^ years or so ago, I got a Smitty X20 Gen 2 with the synth cable when they were being blown out for $400-ish. It gets the job done.

I have the Badlands ZXR 12000 with remote, and I specifically decided on classic wire rope rather than synthetic. I put together a rather complete recovery kit with shackles, blocks, and pulleys and chokers. On occasion I throw in the old high lift jack. I would rather have and not need than need and not have.
Why wire over synthetic? Seems like everyone is on synthetic now

syn is lighter and SIGNIFICANTLY less dangerous.

snap one of each and youll know why wire is obsolete nowadays. terrifying shit. not sure why anyone whould go with wire other than not having broken wire before

Has anyone mentioned winch maintenance? Not to discredit premium brands but I have seen those fail due to poor maintenance.

Make sure to spool and unspool the line every so often. Check the electrical connections for any corrosion. Cycle it before a wheeling trip. Cover it when its not in use. Basic stuff.

You get what you pay for, but sometimes depends on what you need, good enough is good enough.

My Shittybult X2O has been great for 7 years.

Do you guys keep a winch cover on whenever you're not using it? That's one thing I do, just to keep road salt and UV rays from damaging the synthetic line and winch hardware.
