I would rather roll over than hit that unmovable object and stop. Jeep roll cage is a real thing that works.
That isn't a roll cage on your Jeep. It's a "sport cage" with marked differences from a roll cage, mainly strength though. There's a reason people install things like this.

We all know the history of older model Jeep's propensity to roll over. I don't have specifics, but I recall some litigation in the decades possed. IIRC, Consumer Reports put them in their crosshairs long ago about rollovers. Jeep had to do something. So we got wider/fatter jeeps and the rollbars, then this cage.

Didn't know there was a specific definition for Jeeps term "sport cage". I do recall the term "sport cage" from some Jeep literature when I bought my 2018. I took it as a hedge on terminology that some lawyers came up with since definitions run from:
Webster's definition:
": a protective framework of metal bars encasing the driver of a vehicle (such as a racing car)"

Wikipedia:
"A roll cage is a specially engineered and constructed frame built in (or sometimes around, in which case it is known as an exo cage) the passenger compartment of a vehicle to protect its occupants from being injured or killed in an accident, particularly in the event of a rollover"

When I went to the Jeep.com site, I found no mention of "sport cage". In the online brochure, the only reference to "cage" is in the excerpt below.
Jeep Wrangler JL What is this?! roll cag

Just my interpretation, but I think the Jeep lawyers were to slip out of any implied protection by the use of the term "roll cage" in order to avoid liability. So, they invented a term of their own. It appears that invented term is no longer used by them. At least on their website and online brochure.

"Safety cage" is the new and improved term.

They probably also don’t want to call it a “roll cage” for optics - because that implies Jeeps can or will roll over. It’s a negative term… it’s for when you “roll over” versus “safety cage” which is a positive and is for “extra safety.”

Joke's on Jeep, I just invested in Dremel stock!
Gonna take a while with a little Dremel. As the saying goes: "if you've got the time, I've got the beer"

The cutoff wheel they "rate" for hardened steel is enough to get through that weld in 15-20 I'd bet ( DREMEL® EZ Lock Metal Cut Off Wheel Cutting | Dremel), or at least enough to take the BFH to it to snap it off at the cut.

Reminds me of a fun time though - used a Dremel with those wheels to trim ~2" off of the stock JK Rubi rail on each side when I moved to 37s and had to trim the pinch seam and rails to avoid tire interference. That steel is hard and doing both of them with a Dremel in a teeny tiny apartment complex garage in the dead of summer was fun. Must've gone through 8-10 of those discs on those rock rails. May or may not have been a mid-job beer ;)

I asked the guy who installed my RSE rock sliders last week if mine were welded on and he said no, he just took out the bolts.

JLURD built May 17th if that matters.
I just installed a set of RSE Gen III's for a forum member last weekend.

There is no need to take that off. The RSE bracket can be trimmed and the slider itself can be trimmed to fit without issues.

Absolutely! That factory sport bar is junk!

I'm installing that Genright cage once it shows up. I've had it on pre-order since last November.

They're down to installing some production cages on a few JL's to check for fitment then they'll release them in the wild.

Are you going the full banana with the options?

The pre-order peeps get the options for free; the V bar and X Bar.

I won't be doing the B pillar chop though.

I'm only using the front half of their cage as you see it in the picture. The portion from the B pillar to the C pillar will be more custom to accommodate my plans for deleting the back seat.

I wouldn't expect it to do much in a real rollover. Thankfully for the most part, Jeep rollovers are usually slow speed. There is no bonus on the manufacturer to do any safety features like that on a convertible. I mean, look at any other convertible, they have nothing. I'm pretty sure the reason there is any cage on a Jeep is for aesthetics, throwback to days of yore and to support removable roofs.
Granted there might be some "safety" aspects but if I was doing any really hard core wheeling, it would have been replaced already.

I hope that the cover still fits cleanly.
