I am looking for a dash cam to install in my jeep, and wife's car as well. What does everyone use? Anything decent that doesn't break the bank?

I just installed a Viofo A129 plus duo in mine. It was on an amazon fire sale a week or two ago so I picked it up. I bought the hardwire kit as well. I would say that for the price, it works good. It does everything I want it to. People say the camera overheats on the 4k version of this camera so I opted for the 'plus' version.

The camera records well, although there's a bit of glare from the windshield which may be rectified with their $15 CPL filter. I like it that you can have the GPS coords save to the files. You can also set it to record motion when the vehicle is off. I also was interested in h.265 hevc compression. This camera is rumored to do it by way of a hidden combination of buttons, but I haven't tried this yet.

The only thing that I don't like about it is that it's fairly large, but I know nothing about dashcams. The dashcam people rave about is the blackvue one and it does look quite a bit smaller. But at $475 (1080 cam with 256gb, gps, and hardwire kit) vs $209 for the cameras, hardwire kit and 256gb card, it was a no brainer to start with. I mostly wanted the ability to record my gps track and something to hold me over before a new version of the gopro comes out. I have it mounted behind my rearview on the passenger side because I have the advanced safety box. Mounting it there, I just see a little wire going up, as the mirror blocks everything else.

The other thing I didn't like about it is that the second camera uses a proprietary 10-pin usb connector. It seems like most dashcams actually do. I wanted to put the second camera above the rear-view mirror to capture my kids reaction when we go out. The cable that comes with it is long. They have a shorter 55cm cable but it doesn't work with my model. You could use a long cable to get the job done, but it just would had been nicer with the shorter cable.

The last thing is the software. The files are just mp4's (I think) so you can view them with vlc. But if you want to grab the gps data and have it plot it on a map, you need to purchase a 3rd party package. I think it's like $35 for the license and it's a really nice package. But it's just another addon expense. I also think a lot of dashcam manufacturers recommend this dashcam viewer and don't bundle it with the cam.

Let me know if you have any further questions!

The oldest 350 model I bought from 2010 still works. Never missed a beat. No lost footage and very reliable.

Thank you, this helps a lot.
I did a quick search and nothing popped up, I guess it’s because I searched for cam, instead of camera.
